Traxxas Starts 2014 TORC Season With an Action Packed Day of Racing
PRIMM, Nev. – A jam-packed field of PRO Lights, an ambulance ride for a rising star, and a champion denied a win due to a last-lap pass was how TORC: The Off-Road Championship Presented by AMSOIL kicked off its 2014 season Saturday. Starting Saturday was one of the biggest PRO Light fields ever as 24 trucks took the green flag. CJ Greaves lead the field, but the racing behind him was physical and non-stop with Doug Mittag, Jerett Brooks, and Keegan Kincaid swapping positions for the entirety of the race. Teammates Mittag and Brooks were able to finish second and third, respectively. The PRO 2 race was dominated by Chad Hord, who won the race from the pole, leading every lap. Unfortunately, the race won’t be remembered for Hord’s powerful display as former Indy Lights star Arie Luyendyk Jr. left the track via the ambulance after a vicious crash out of Turn 2. Luyendyk barrel rolled six times before coming to a stop next to the fire and safety teams. Fortunately Arie was not seriously injured and was able to return to the track Sunday. When the race resumed Chad Hord lead the field for the rest of the race, but we saw a hard fought battle between Mike Jenkins and Marty Hart to the checkered flag. When the dust settled, it was Chad Horn in first, Marty Hart second and Mike Jenkins rounding out the field. Despite rolling his MONSTER Energy PRO 4 and having most of his livery removed during the ensuing caution, defending class champion Johnny Greaves was poised for a worst-to-first finish. AMSOIL pilot Scott Douglas earned the pole and broke out to an early lead until Greaves rolled his truck, bringing out the yellow flag. Douglas bolted again when the green flag dropped but slowed dramatically, allowing Greaves to overtake him. The two-time TORC PRO 4 title holder then took a 15-truck length lead over second-place Adrian Cenni, but Greaves got loose in a turn, hitting a hay bale and allowing “The Wildman” to close in. On the final lap going in to Turn 2, Cenni went high while Greaves went low, putting the two side-by-side. Cenni was able to complete the pass in Turn 3 and went on to take the checkered flag. Day one of the 2014 TORC season full of thrill packed action and sets the stage for a season of incredible racing to come.
