(06/19/12) This past weekend in Thunder Valley marked a huge win for Tony Schumacher. Not only did he break his winless streak that dates back to 2010, he also won a berth into the Traxxas Nitro Shootout, and also took home a coveted Traxxas XO1. Tony joined Spencer Massey, Antron Brown, Morgan Lucas, Steve Torrence, and David Grubnic, leaving only one more “winnable” entry into the Shootout.
Ron Capps, for the sixth consecutive time this season, took his Funny Car to the final round. He defeated rookie Alexis DeJoria to take home his second Funny Car win of the 2012 season. Ron Capps was already entered in the Traxxas Nitro Shootout for winning in Atlanta, thus preserving the final “winnable” Funny Car spot on the Traxxas Nitro Shootout board for another week. Both Funny Car and Top Fuel drivers will still be able to obtain the final Traxxas Nitro Shootout position, the fan vote lottery drawing, which will happen later this season!
To recap, the Traxxas Nitro Shootout is open to the first seven winners of a NHRA Funny Car or Top Fuel race leading up to the U.S. Nationals. However, the points leader in both categories, if not already qualified in, automatically receives the top seed into the race. The last spot in each class is determined by the fan vote lottery style drawing that was mentioned above. If there are still positions open on the Traxxas Nitro Shootout board, the remaining positions will be filled in order by the highest ranked drivers in the point’s standings that have not won a race.
As the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series heads to Chicago for the O’Reilly Route 66 Nationals, we could very well see the last spot on both Shootout boards get filled as many drivers are still shooting for their first win of 2012.
