(05/22/12) Following last weekends race in Heartland Park Topeka, the Traxxas Nitro Shootout board in both Top Fuel and Funny Car now has five entries. In the Funny Car category, John Force, Robert Hight, Mike Neff, and Ron Capps have already raced their way into the Traxxas Shootout. The Top Fuel portion consisted of Spencer Massey, Antron Brown, Morgan Lucas, and Steve Torrence.
If you missed the NHRA Dollar General Summer Nationals, Jack Beckman took out Ron Capps in the final round of Funny Car. This was the first Funny Car final of 2012 in which a Traxxas John Force Racing driver was not represented. Ron Capps had made it to his fourth final round in a row, but Jack Beckman stopped his chances of a back-to-back win. Jack took home the Heartland Park Wally and is now entered in the Traxxas Nitro Shootout, the second Don Schumacher Funny Car driver to do so. Spencer Massey again made it to the Top Fuel final round this past week in Topeka. Spencer’s Top Fuel Dragster wasn’t strong enough to take down David Grubnic in the final. Since this was David’s first win of 2012, he added his name to the Traxxas Nitro Shootout in Top Fuel. With only two winnable spots remaining in both classes, the pressure is on every driver who hasn’t won to get into the Shootout!
The Traxxas Nitro Shootout is open to the first seven winners of a NHRA Funny Car or Top Fuel race leading up to the U.S. Nationals. However, the points leader in both categories, if not already qualified in, automatically receives the top seed into the race. The last spot in each class is determined by a fan vote lottery drawing. If there are still positions open on the Traxxas Nitro Shootout board, the remaining positions will be filled in order by the highest ranked drivers in the point’s standings that have not won a race.
Traxxas and the NHRA head to New Jersey for the ToyotaSupernationals May 31st through June 3rd. You can stay up-to-date with the Traxxas Nitro Shootout on Traxxas.com, Facebook.com/TraxxasRacing, and on the Traxxas Racing Twitter page.
