(05/09/12) This week at Atlanta Dragway we finally added two new names to each of the Traxxas Nitro Shootout boards! Steve Torrence took home the Wally, the first Top Fuel win of his career! Ron Capps finally ended the Traxxas John Force Racing Funny Car winning streak taking home a win and grabbing an entry into the Traxxas Nitro Shootout.
This leaves just three shootout spots open in both Top Fuel and Funny Car that can be attained by winning a race. Following race seven in Atlanta, the drivers currently entered in the Top Fuel portion of the Traxxas Nitro Shootout are: Spencer Massey, Antron Brown, Morgan Lucas, and Steve Torrence. The current entires in the Funny Car category are: John Force, Robert Hight, Mike Neff, and Ron Capps. They will race against four other drivers in each category at the U.S. Nationals.
The Traxxas shootout is a race within a race. The program rewards the top four finishers at the U.S. Nationals held in September. The winner will receive $100,000, runner-up receives $15,000, and semifinalists receive $7,500.
The Traxxas Nitro Shootout is open to the first seven winners of a NHRA Funny Car or Top Fuel race leading up to the U.S. Nationals. However, the points leader in both categories, if not already qualified, automatically receives the top seed into the race. The last spot in each class is determined by to a fan vote lottery drawing. If there are still positions open on the Traxxas Shootout board, the remaining positions will be filled in order by the highest ranked drivers in the point’s standings that have not won a race.
The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series heads to the Heartland in Topeka Kansas for race eight, the Dollar General Summer Nationals! Remember to look for updates on Traxxas.com, Facebook.com/Traxxas Racing, and on our Traxxas Racing Twitter page.
