Tech Spotlight: Magnum 272R Transmission
Upgrade Your Vehicle to the Ultimate Performance Transmission
In the world of RC drag racing, explosive power, hard launches, and high-grip surfaces are an everyday fact of life—and they’re torture on a drivetrain. That’s why Traxxas redesigned the already-tough Magnum transmission for drag duty in the form of the all-new Magnum 272R. Built specifically for the Drag Slash, the new Magnum transmission also fits standard or VXL 2WD Bandit®, Rustler®, Stampede®, or Slash for the ultimate in durability and performance. We’ll take a look at some of the unique features of the Magnum 272R transmission in our latest tech spotlight. Also check out this how-to article to see how easy it is to install.

The Magnum 272R is the perfect upgrade for your high-power 2WD model. Here it is installed in the 70+ mph Bandit VXL.

The first stage in the Magnum 272R’s evolution is its high-strength reinforced case. A new 3.2mm aluminum motor plate creates a thicker and more rigid backbone for the housing and helps dissipate heat. The case also adds more composite material in critical areas to boost rigidity and strength. The low-profile design keeps weight lower in the chassis with precisely interlocking halves to seal out dirt. No matter which 2WD vehicle you are running, the Magnum 272R stands ready to take on your toughest challenges.

All the gears in the 272R are made from steel, but the input gear and top shaft are incredibly tough. The standard shaft uses a pin-through-hole design to keep the input gear in place. This is fine even for high-power applications, but Traxxas left nothing to chance with the new Magnum 272R. The new input gear is press-fit directly onto a hardened steel shaft for ultimate strength and durability under extreme conditions. Built to handle brutal drag race launches, the Magnum 272R will add next-level toughness to your off-road Bandit, Slash, Rustler, or Stampede.

Competitive drag racing requires maximum traction from start to finish, but the same technology making that possible works for all 2WD vehicles. The Magnum’s new sealed differential helps to prevent unloading the wheel with less traction by distributing torque equally. This works even better on the loose surfaces that Bandit, Rustler, Stampede, and Slash call home. You can vary the locking action of the differential by tuning it with thicker or thinner differential oil. Upgrade your vehicle to the new Magnum 272R transmission and launch harder, corner faster, and put more power to the ground.

Having a tunable differential is a great advantage on any type of surface and Traxxas makes it easy with the Magnum’s removable differential. Just disengage the axles and open the service port on the bottom of the transmission and you’ll have access to the differential in as little as 5 minutes. It’s these thoughtful design touches that make Traxxas vehicles so much fun to run and customize.
