Step 1: Unplug the motor and remove the wire hold-down
Pull the motor leads apart and remove the screw that secures the wire hold-down with a 2 mm driver. If you haven’t already upgraded to hex drivers, the Traxxas 3415 tool set is an excellent, affordable choice. Or, go premium with the 8712 Speed Bit Essentials set.
Step 2: Remove the motor
You’ll need a 2.5 mm driver to remove the motor screw. A ball-end driver will make the job easier by allowing you to access the screw at an angle. After removing the screw, lift the motor up to disengage the motor plate from the chassis. Be careful not to lose the plastic gear-mesh insert that fits into the motor plate.
Step 3: Remove the motor plate
Use a 2 mm driver to remove the two countersunk screws that hold the motor in place. There’s no need to remove the pinion, it will pass through the hole in the motor plate.
Step 4: Install the heatsink
Wipe the motor off before installing the heatsink so dirt or grit doesn’t interfere with its fit and reduce the heatsink’s effectiveness. Slide the heatsink over the motor from the front, and push it back until it is flush with the front of the motor.
Step 5: Reinstall the motor and wire hold-down
Angle the heat sink as shown so it doesn’t interfere with the motor mounting screw. If you decide to change your gear ratio at this time, be sure to consult the owner's manual for the correct gear mesh settings. In our Rustler 4X4 VXL, we're sticking with the stock gearing which uses the outermost hole in the gear-mesh setting.
Step 6: Trim the fan shroud
Cut away the step-down portion of the fan shroud as shown. Side cutters or flush cutters are ideal for this. You can use a sanding drum and rotary tool to smooth down any remaining bits of the shroud for a factory look, but it’s not required. If you're installing the fan onto the Hoss 4X4 VXL, you can skip this step.
Step 7: Install the fan
Use the supplied coarse-thread screws to mount the fan to the heatsink. The screws simply grab the space between the fins, there aren’t actual holes for the screws. If it’s not already plugged in, insert the extension harness into the red plug.
Step 8: Remove the receiver box’s wire clamp and lid
We need to access the receiver so the fan can plug into it. Use a 2 mm driver to remove the wire clamp, and a 2.5 mm driver to remove the lid.
Step 9: Plug the fan into the receiver
Route the fan’s wire harness through the receiver box lid and insert into the receiver’s channel-5 / battery port (CH5 / BATT).
Step 10: Reinstall the receiver box lid and wire clamp
Make sure the box’s blue silicone gasket is properly located in its channel, and the fan harness is not pinched between the box and lid. Align the wires for the antenna servo, speed control, and fan in the channels in the receiver box lid, and add grease to the foam seals if needed. Make sure there’s a little slack in the fan wire to accommodate chassis flex. Reinstall the wire clamp to complete the heatsink and fan installation.
That’s a wrap! The fan will switch on with the speed control and remain running as long as your model is powered up.
