I just got the 1/10th scale e revo brushed, can I switch the nimh batteries to the 11.1 lipo batteries?

No. The EVX-2 electronic speed controller has a maximum rating of 4S. A 3S pack on the BEC side (the plug with the red tag on the wires) can damage the ESC.

Can I switch to lower voltage lipos? Or will it not help?

Two 2S LiPos (7.4V nominal, 8.4V maximum) work fine in the brushed E-Revo.
Watch the heat of the Titan motors. Large LiPo packs with their accompanying extended runtime don't give the motors a chance to cool down.

Recommended batteries per the Traxxas Battery Application Guide

the boss, was the unit new or used? Verify it says Low Voltage Detection on the EVX-2 on the front.

Is it possible to run a single 4s pack on an evx2?

I have read yes and no... if it can be done, it would have to be done in NiMH mode.
Whatever it is I just typed... could be wrong.

I am not sure if it will fit... will it?

4200mAh is a little on the low side... 5000mAh+ is what I suggest.
If it were mine, I would go for this one:

Is the brushless battery area the same as the brushed?

Yes, the chassis for both E-Revos and the Summit too are identical.

All it takes is a few parts...

    Motor plate
    Gear cover
    8th scale power system

If you are doing it on the cheap you don't "need" the single motor plate and gear cover, use the stock dual motor plate and cover and just cover up the hole where the other motor used to be.
