    New to 4x4

So here is the deal, I've always wanted to get a 4x4 but they were always so expensive. I saw a Slash 4x4 on eBay and just for fun I bid on it thinking someone would outbid me... That didn't happen. so in the next week I have a hcg vxl slash 4x4 with proline shocks.

So my plans for this truck are as follows, mamba monster 2 / 2200kv motor, 3/4s batteries, 1/8 buggy tires, aka adapters.

My problem here is that I know everything there is to know about the slash 2wd but nothing about the 4x4 platform, I don't know what problems I'll run into along the way so I figured I would get some input right away.

From what I have read thus far, some worthwhile upgrades are the Tekno center driveshaft, king headz motor mount, and XO-1 differentials. I hear driveshafts all the time but I run a mamba monster in my 2wd and 4x4 shafts and not a single issue with torque limiting so I figure 4 versus 2 shafts...no problem.

    Thanks!

I'm not sure if it's Center Driveshafts you want, but you probably want Tekno Driveshafts as well. Definitely King Headz Motor Mount and Slipper Bearing Adaptor might be upgrades you want to think about.

I choose to go MIP after alot of research youll find your choice people love both. The center tekno big bone is an upgrade the LCG needs not hcg. Sway bars are a good next upgrade

Truck has sway bars already installed, why would a center driveshaft only be an upgrade for the lcg.. That makes zero sense whatsoever.

The upgrade isn't exclusive, it just isn't needed on the hcg. The reason people like the big bone for the LCG is because the bucket style chassis flexes and the big-bone deals with that issue much better than stock. Some people, like myself, opt for the chassis brace route and the stock shaft is fine there.

Havent even owned it for 24 hours and I already ordered a mamba monster 2.

Friend had a 2650 he sold me for $50 and the spare radio. I won an auction for the mm2 esc - $101.

One thing I was worried about was the lcg mamba monster and the chassis brace, where does the receiver go??

You may need stiffer shock springs for the extra weight.

I agree 100%, before I pulled my 2650 and went back to the imo more applicable 2400 I used the stiffest springs in the pro line power stroke spring kit.

I love the truck thus far, 4 wheels turning versus 2 is a world of difference. CRAZY FAST. It accelerates like nothing else ive ever seen. It's almost complete, got the king headz mount, bearing adapter, and tekno big bone on order. I'll be done for a little while until the durability mods start showing up like aluminum hubs, rpm bumpers, lights, that stuff will be fun.

As far as springs go, I find the stock pro line springs to be just fine holding the weight, the 2 stage spring is pretty much defeated by the weight but it feels good anyways.

All in all I have only $530 into the truck. Kind of hard to believe, except I sold the velineon and both sets of tires it came with.

    What's done so far is..
LCG chassis / ext battery hold down
    MM2/2650KV
    AKA 17MM Adapters+suprasales big blocks
    XO-1 Differentials / 60k front - 30k rear.
    Pro line power
    strokes in all four corners
RPM rod ends and shaved driveshafts (got rid of the stiffness)

In all its glory, I present to you, my slash.

Currently all I'm planning on is the traxxas red anodized aluminum rear bearing carriers and to set up some kind of lighting. For the front just an rpm bumper and light canisters, not sure about the rear, might fabricate something.

Got the tail lights all done, very clean looking. Ordered a rpm bumper and light can set. Went and splurged at RadioShack for a 60watt soldering iron, solder, and some nice 5mm LEDs for the front bumper.

How is the rs 60watt iron? I've been using an RL link (I think) 30 watt iron and it's killing me lol.

I was using a 30watt before as well, I'm not sure what's up with the tip on this thing but solder just won't stick to it.. Solders the thin led wires easy but so did my 30watt so I dont really know, it heats up faster than the 30.

The front light connector is all rigged up and ready for the rpm bumper and light cans when they come in.

Did you flux and tin the tip?
I used to solder with out flux using pre fluxed solder but will use flux for know on,when I got back in the hobby I was horrible at soldering but have become quite proficient.

I tinned the tip but I didn't know what I was doing apparently. I just ran my dremel on the tip and it works amazingly now. It got a nice workout soldering lights tonight.

Got the nice traxxas rear bearing carriers yesterday and they look nice, disappointed that they didn't come with bearings however.

I like doing my own stuff because it is custom fit, can just unplug the front or rear and it comes off with the bumper. I also drilled out the light cans for 5mm high brightness LEDs.

I just upgraded it because that's what the forum advised, usually I just run it til it breaks but I had money burning a hole in my pocket.. haha

I'm currently having driveshaft issues, snapping the ears off the yokes. The 4x4 weighs only 11 ounces more than my 2wd fully loaded. The 4x4 has a leg up on the 2wd in driveshaft durability as it has 4 instead of 2 moving the truck. Keep in mind that this is in zero degree weather.

That is the whole reason I went with Mip X-Duty's! You can beat on them hard and they take it! If you put them together right, you have no worries.

Each led takes ~3v so I just wired two sets in series. Just like this.

I have also put some hot glue on the lights to prevent shorts and breakages.

I really like the way the truck looks now, that orange wasnt pretty.. When I looked closer at my main bearing I could see that the inner race wasnt spinning, took off the spur gear and found the bearing was seized. Put my spare bearing in packed with grease to prevent this happening again. I had to use some electrical tape to take up what wore off the slipper adapter.

I also regreased both front and rear differentials, its much quieter now, unsurprisingly.
