    Rebuilding My Second Hand T-Maxx!!!

Recently I traded away my scale rig for my first Nitro MT. So far I love this truck, It runs and drives ok but it has a few issues that come with buying a used RC. Today I removed the engine, tranny, front and rear bulk assemblies and all electronics. A couple of pluses this truck came with- Hitec High torque steering servo, Robinson Racing Forward only gears and slipper spur kit and Brake kit, RPM Shock towers, Proline A-Arms, Traxxas CVDs, Aluminum skid plates and servo protector. A couple things I noticed that needed some attention were the Diffs had WAY to much resistance, the steering seems to be the same, all the shocks need rebuilding, and like most neglected RC's, there is WAY too much grime build-up in those hard to reach places. Time to start...

Looks good, pretty well set up!

It NEVER ENDS! Starts with "it needs cleaning & maintinace", that turns into well this needs upgraded, that could use it too & before you know it you too need H.U.A. "Hop Ups Anonymous", shoot NitroNaught a PM for meeting schedules!

Without regular HUA meetings you end up looking like this--

Got the rear diff out... This is a BIG NO NO! Way too much grease, and this stuff is THICK! Almost like glue. Please people, don't do this! Offenders will have ears packed with offending substance.

That’s just old grease that’s been in the diff for a long time. I’ve used thicker grease/lube than that. Just depends on how stiff you want the diff action.
That one is long due for a change though.

There was ALOT of resistance in that diff. I could literally stick the gear to the wall with that stuff.

Well thats good actually. You want it real thick in there if you're driving offroad.
Just make sure its thick AND clean.

Looking into placing an order. Main thing I want to figure out at this point is what direction I want to go with on the body. I'm a big fan of classic monster trucks. Saw a sweet looking USA-1 and bigfoot being made on here and it's giving me some ideas. I always loved Carolina crusher and king crunch. Time for some research!

This would be a perfect opportunity to upgrade your diffs to something like this:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-TRAXXAS-39...item20cf048bec

They're sealed and can be tuned with different grades of diff oil.
They're built to handle the torque of brushless electric motors so they can easily handle
the torque of any engine you throw at them.

That looks like a good idea, problem is in the description, won't fit older 2.5 tmaxx's. More or less I was hoping to keep most of the parts the same, these diffs I have seem strong enough for what I need. I'm not much of a standing backflip kinda guy, more into old school nostalgia. We'll see what I end up with, right now I'm having issues doing most of the work due to a healing severed finger so this may take a while.

Yeah that guys decription was a little misleading. I just added some to my old 2.5
True, the driveshaft yokes have to be filed down a scoche for the holes to line up but I think it's well worth it.

Anyhow, I enjoy build threads like this so keep it going and I hope the finger heals quickly.

Good if your running in the sand dunes, bad if you run anywere else.

Spools are very on the axles when not running in very soft gound.

Thick grease or diff lock fluid works well if you want to limit the diff action.

Went to the lhs today. Got suspension pins and bearings. Regreased and put new bearings in the diff. Problem I ran into, when I bought the truck it had the proline suspension kit. According to the lhs they don't make that kit anymore. My concern is if I switch to rpm arms will I have to switch the hub carriers and pillow balls?... supposedly the camber will be way off without swapping all of it.

Just measure the arms from the center of hinge pin to the end of the arm and compare them to the stock or rpm arms.
You sure you have Traxxas cvd’s? I don’t think they made a set that will work with the 2.5 style axle carriers.

Got a lot of work done on it, no pics yet due to defrag issues on the pc. Swapped all arms for rpm, all new bearings throughout, sealed the engine and today I picked up the tqi-4 with the dock. Shocks all rebuilt w/30wt. Pics to come

Next is to install the receiver for the tqi and servos. Looking into options for a new fuel tank. I see most require modification or different placement, still undecided. My tank is still good, I'm just being picky because it looks nasty...

Went to lhs today, without fiance's permission. Ah well. New hitec 645mg. Proline Ford F250 body. Colors are being considered. Thinking blue/silver/chrome. Or red/black/chrome. Rpm parts are blue so...

Going with pactra cobalt blue and Indy silver, spaz stix mirror chrome. Freaked out when I sprayed the blue, looked semi transparent. Turns out you have to back it to show the color. Coming along rather nicely. Going with actual bedliner for the outside of the shell in the bed area. Will post up some pics when it's done.

Sounds like a great color combo man.
Color tranparnecy isnt necessarily a bad thing. Just give it enough coats to
eliminate the blotches. You'll get a brighter color without a backing color as I found out.

I screwed up a blue metallic body I painted recently by adding a black backing.

Completely changed the color shade to a muddy blue. Thankfully, it's a basher body
thats gonna get beat up anyhow.

Some updates! Installed a new 3.3TRX. Broke it in proper, Took it out for some donuts, shredded the wheel and the hex, replaced the hexes and slapped on some Savage wheels and tires I had lying around till I can get some 17mm adapters and new wheels. Had some heat issues, 305 deg! So I trimmed the windshield and rear window and replaced with Nylon window screen per other Traxxas Forum User suggestions. Thanks again man! Here are some pics of it lately in the garage. Still to cold to go have some fun. Not sure what to do with the Picco Omega .21 that was in it so it will sit on a shelf. Traxxas engines belong in a traxxas vehicle. Also swapped the Integy springs out for Traxxas Progressive Rates, I like 'em.

Some carnage, I now have a single speed s-maxx! At least until Tower sends out the new input shaft gears. Noticed something was wrong when I had it on the bench and tried to roll the truck and something bound up. So for now since its so nice out I just took the second gear out. I think I like the rear wheel drive! Not even sure what center shafts these are but I'm hoping I can get the replacement pin that sheared off...

    Toasted second gear...
