    Rough clicking

I've been running this slash vxl rough in bark chips and dirt and started noticing this rough sound when it runs, like a clicking/sticking noise. Only had this unit a couple weeks. And I'm a beginner.

Can you tell what needs fixing?

oh yeah, just happened to me last night. you broke gears inside the transmission case. which one is hard to say but there are 3 main gears. theres the one on the end of the slipper clutch shaft, an idler gear, and then the differential gear. i broke ones on the differential gear and the idler myself.

That does sound internal vs something jammed in the drivetrain.

Is your slipper tightened all the way down (the spring looks compressed fully)? Mine was from the factory...no slip. Does not allow slippage/cushion to the drivetrain.

Found the broken gear, the differential, others look fine. Only stripped on one side....

Is there a gear I can replace this with which will be less likely to strip?

Do you think the failure is related to the plastic transmission case? While this is disassembled I'm happy to replace any/all of these parts with high quality ones, including the transmission case, if it will reduce failure rate going forward. Appreciate your suggestions.

It's fantastic, but $50 shipped. It's an all metal gear and case and can be sealed to hold different oil weights, usually 30000wt - 50000wt or higher.

Brian... that's too funny.. my sons slash just broke the same ring gear as well as the steel idler gear.. I've broken them in the past with my rustler and its mostly from the torque of the brushless motors and in his case, excessive wheelies... Its one of those things that happens, but thankfully not very often.. maybe once every year or so.. I looked at the FLM gear, but at $50 for that one or around $5 for the traxxas one.. I'll keep mine and my sons stock..

Hum.. Will think about the gear, thanks for the pointer. Maybe one of those "if it happens again" deals.

While I've got this open should I put in fresh lube? What kind?

well you have to replace the entire diff so the new one shouldnt have any fluid in it. you deffinately want some heavy diff lube so it will both stay in the unsealed diff longer, as well as keep one tire from spinning so much easier than the other.

i think for the price of the flm setup for now that i will just buy extra gears, keep my slipper clutch a hair looser and run heavy diff oil that will stay in longer since mine is broke to. but i broke idler and diff.

You'll need to go lipo for better wheelies, and keep the slipper backed off 1/4 turn from fully tight.
