so i put in 2 1600 mah batteries in my merv with the optional pinion gear today for races. well need less to say i loved the take off power and speed, but it over heats in bout 8 minutes, and it starts losing power quick. what did i do wrong? batteries are in series. should i get a smaller spur gear?
4s is too much you will end up frying it. Stick with 3 cell Max!
Maybe you didnt read (this part of) the manual (page 13):
The High Speed dual-battery battery and gearing
configuration is for high-speed running on smooth
surfaces only. Avoid repetitive hard acceleration to prevent
overstressing the motor, speed control and batteries.
Running the car on 2 batteries is in series increases the load of work for the controller which only can handle it for a short amount of time. Driving on high speed needs way less power and causes less stress to motor and controller than accelerating a lot.
Nobody is born with experience
Yep figured that too late. Still only good for short speed runs then a good cool down
i was runnin short distances on the pavement and not all out at once
is there a way i could set it up with the traxxas parallel connector and get the same power response as in series? with out the overheating problem? should i go to lipos?
no you cant get the same response from parallel you'll see it if you go with a 3s lipo though and go in parallel for longer runtimes but i wouldnt recommend it to put it into parallel with 3s as the motor esc will heat up still like in series so cool downs would be needed still but atleast you wont over load the esc with 3s lipo. i would recommend gearing down to like 19t pinion to help with temps on 3s. hope that helps you out.

With 19 gearing you would almost be better off staying with a 2 cell. Get a good heat sink and a fan on the Esc will help. Maybe a fan on both I put a fan on my motor and lowered temps from 150 to 110. Decent gearing and cool downs are still recommended though
k so, ill start looking into a fan for the esc and a heat sink for the motor. any suggestions on what kind and where to get them? and how hard is it to hook up?
