XL5 and VXL3s screw tabs broke

Did anyone else have an issue with the screw tabs on the XL5 and VXL3s breaking off. It happen on my stock one and then I upgraded to the VXL and the same thing happen with the tab breaking off. Talk about a pour design...they should just mold the plastic tabs completely to the housing and not just a tiny 1/16th piece of plastic. Has anyone used any type of glue with any luck holding?

I agree. Very poor design. I ended up making a platform out of plexiglass which I screwed into the holes the esc screwed into. I used velcro to secure the esc to the plexiglass. Servo tape should also work.

You could also relocate the esc to the chasis body and secure with servo tape.

I do have one mounted with zip ties because I don't have the vxl platform, and it works ok for me.

Real question is, how tight are you tightening the screws??? Should only be snug and then about another 1/2 turn.

VXL3s mount tabs broke of my stampede after 1 week of owning it, not even hard bashing or jumping - rolled once or twice and they sheared right off. Traxxas support offered me nothing except for having me send both motor and esc in for testing - pay shipping etc...

doing some looking around I found RPM makes a cage mount for the VXL3s - which works even if your tabs are busted... love it for only $10 saved me the hassle dealing with traxxas RMA support nonsense.

    here they are:

definatly recommend them - easy to install and secure.

Pfft! Castle Creations ESCs don't even have tabs! For years, I've always just used a glob of Shoe Goo. The ESC will need to be pried off.

Most non-RTR ESCs are stuck down with foam backed double sided tape. I've found (1:1) car body trim tape works really well as its both heat and water resistant by design. Amazingly, it even peels off in one piece when I want to remove it.
Pretty please, with sugar on top, clean the RC car

I agree. I would grade them at A+. Same for AMain, T-Bone Racing and Castle.

LOL, I thought the same thing when i bought the slash. Last time i saw an esc with similar tabs was in 1990 from futaba and it had tabs on it that made it have the same mounting profile as the standard servo that controlled the old school speed control. Even then, the tabs were basically suicide tabs, having an indent into them so that they would easily break off.

The thought of giving RPM $10 to mount an esc to my car makes me shudder.

You can mount a lot of ESCs with a $6 tube of Shoe Goo!

On my XL5, I had to superglue it twice, but it eventually held well. Not too sur any more if the waterproofing qaulities had diminishes as a bit of the casing too came off with the plastic screw hinge.
