    Transmission gears

I bought an older Stampede XL5 Is there a way to tell if the transmission has metal gears without taking it apart? it is the gray plastic case not black.

Unless it's been messed with... Keep in mind this is an older used pede, so there could be any mixture of parts in there. Best to do as directed above and remove the rear skid plate, peel up the tape and see if the diff is steel. But even this won't give you a definate answer of what the other gears are made of. Plus, you don't know how well the last owner looked after it, so if I were you I'd take the tranny apart and inspect the innards and regrease.
