No, it won't mess anything up, but it will be a lot slower.

The stock motors really aren't that great, but luckly there are a lot of aftermarket options.

I haven't used a brushed motor for years so I can't give any up to date advice. When I was using brushed motors I liked reedy motors. Use a 12T - 17T motor for general off road use. I sprayed out the motor with electrical contact cleaner after each day at the track to keep it clean-then oil the bushings at the ends of the motor with thin oil.

If you go brushless, the traxxas esc/motor is a great combo.

Team epic is re-releasing the speed gems series soon. Higher quality then most brush motors being produce still. They come in different turns but the 17 or 19 turn will be perfect for the slash. But you can find good high proformance motors on eBay or other forums from racers.

Sadly no one makes 550 high quality brush motors anymore. But a good 540 brush will easily do the job and if not provide even more power. Just gear it right keep it clean and enjoy. I do recommend strc motor plate just to remove any transmission flex and help dissipate heat better.
