it is definitely the bec, i tried to run a fan on the internal bec on 4s and the esc would almost instantly shut down. once the fan was removed the esc would let me run about a pass and a half before...
the internal limit you speak of is due to the internal linear bec of the stock speed control. I used an external switching bec for my speed runs as the regular would overheat and show symptoms like...
i've done 81 on stock esc/motor and i'm sure i can get 90 out of it if i had the time. Setup is listed on the more info tab in the video.

cells 2+3 are connected to each other via the series connector. cell 2's +ve lead is the same as cell 3's -ve lead

Castle BEC is a piece of trash, i've gone through 3 of them. This one is the one i use on my mini e-revo and have used it in...
You could do it, but you need to watch the temps on your batteries during a charge. I wouldn't risk it, but if you do charge them at 2amps, charging at 1amp with them in parallel doesn't make them...
Don't charge nimh packs in parallel, it throws off the peak detection on the charger and you could overcharge your packs.
You just need to shave down the rear hexes a little bit with a dremel ;)

the wires coming out of the motor are part of the windings, you'd be better off opening the esc and soldering longer wires to that
