Since the 2wd slash uses the same transmission and motor as a 2pede and the Pede comes with 2.8 tires. I would look up stock gearing on the Pede and use that.

If you're using a Traxxas ESC, could it have accidentally been put into training mode?
If your Pede has a brushless motor. Try each motor on the other esc in order to isolate the problem. Since you bought it used the esc might be bad.

I think your part just had an air bubble in it, and that is why it broke in that location.
They're different, it is easier for me to see it looking at the front of the wheels. Also look at the thickness of the ring around the hex. Two of them are thinner than the others.
