Think about aluminum shock caps if you're taking big jumps. The pede handles them great but I've had the plastic caps pop off a few times... I also put on the slash (2wd) front bumper.
For $40, I think I'd go with the new King Headz mount that allows for an oversize bearing.
+1 and watch the bearing in the motor mount (slipper/diff)... its caused a lot of pain
I went through the same process and ended up with a VXL.
I would have upgraded the following on the XL-5:
- 2.4 tx/rx
- Bearings to replace bushings
- Eventually a brushless set up
