At 32º F fuel can start to freeze, most people probably don't have to worry about "gelling" if they keep their fuel in a cooler (with out ice of course) it should stay above freezing.

I would like to know how long you have had your T Maxx and have you ever replaced your clutchbell?
They get knife edged over time and this can cause premature wear/damage to spur gears.
Have you inspected your clutch shoes/spring?
The shoes could be worn and or glazed.
When you change to a steel spur gear you need to replace the clutchbell as well so you have two new mating surfaces.
If you put a new gear onto a worn/used gear one or the other will fail.

I think you should take the time to find out your elevation, it is very important to know when tuning a glow engine especially since you are having issues and have asked others for assistance.
The spur gear will spin free by hand and not move the output shafts.
It is fine to pick up where you left off.
Make sure to follow the DVD and manual.
I suspect you put one in backwards.
The front diff case screws should face the battery box and the rear diff case screws should face the engine side.
In the process did you remove either one or both of the diffs?
