I've had great success with the Slash 4x4 without changing the stock motor, have you looked at the stock specs for different gearing option. This might help you with temp issue:

I have both truck and you can't go wrong with either. My personal favorite is the Revo, never thought I would say that after loving my TMaxx for so many years.

Torque - 124 oz.
Sound like you can rich-en your HSN, also when you loose your tune set the needles back to factory and start from there...
I took some time to break-in the 3.3 today and all is good. Tomorrow I will start laying into it for some good old bashing...
