Traxxas Nitro Shootout standings after
the NHRA 4 Wide Nationals
The Traxxas Nitro Shootout leader boards don’t reflect it, but we already have five NHRA races in the books! Traxxas’ Robert Hight has made it nearly impossible for any other driver to qualify thus far by winning the past 4 races in a row. Hight and John Force are already locked in the Funny Car portion of the Nitro Shootout that will be run at Indy during the U.S. Nationals. John won the season opening NHRA Winternationals in Pomona.
Spencer Massey has won 3 races so far this season in Top Fuel. Massey took home the 4 Wide Nationals Wally this weekend at zMax Dragway. He is showing the rest of the Top Fuel field why he will be a force to be reckoned with when we get to the U.S. Nationals in September. Spencer, combined with both Antron Brown and Morgan Lucas, makes up the qualified drivers for the Top Fuel portion of the Traxxas Nitro Shootout. There are still 4 spots that can be obtained by winning a race in Top Fuel and 5 spots in Funny Car.
To recap, the Traxxas Nitro Shootout is open to the first 7 winners of a NHRA Funny Car or Top Fuel race leading up to the U.S. Nationals. However, the points leader in both categories, if not already qualified, automatically receives the top seed going into the race. The last spot in each class is determined by a fan vote lottery drawing. If there are still positions open on the Traxxas Nitro Shootout leader board, the remaining positions will be filled in order by the highest ranked drivers in the points standings who have not won a race.
The Traxxas Nitro Shootout is a race within a race. The program rewards the top four finishers at the U.S. Nationals held in September. The winner will receive $100,000, runner-up receives $15,000, and semifinalists receive $7,500.
