Traxxas at the 2009 Wire Grass Indoor
Nationals

Hundreds of RC racers attended the first annual Wire Grass Indoor Nationals at the National Peanut Festival Fairgrounds located in Dothan, AL. The weather was dry and warm all weekend, but thanks to the covered track, it could have rained all week and the racing wouldn't have slowed down at all. The track is located within the 60,000 square foot arena, which provided more than enough space for the large national-caliber track.

The track was large and fast with lots of room to open up the throttle. A huge tabletop on the back straight launched vehicles so high in the air that it was debatable whether jumping the tabletop helped or hurt lap times. The consequences of not hitting it just right were, in some cases, race ending. The surface was fairly slick, which made corner speed difficult to maintain, and the Wiregrass track was challenging. The combined elements of slick conditions and tricky blown-out sections kept racers on their toes.

There were two classes at the Wire Grass Indoor Nationals where Traxxas racers competed for prizes: Monster Truck and Slash. The track was a little big for the stock Slashes, but the racing was still a lot of fun. The slick track made it tricky to keep the truck in the fast line around the corners. All of the Monster Truck entries were Traxxas Revos. There were also a couple of brushless-powered E-Revos that clicked off seriously fast lap times.

Slash

The Slash class is a blast no matter where you're racing them. It's just a fun truck to drive and great for the R/C hobby and sport. There were quite a few Slash entries and the A-main was looking pretty tough. Mike Battaile had great Slash runs all weekend and capped it off with a strong win in the 10-minute A-main. Second place belonged to Kyle Touchette who drove clean and steady. I managed to salvage third after a very rough lap while Kendell Davis and Danny Reddish rounded out the top five.

Monster Truck

The Revos were getting around the track very well with the faster lap times being in the low 40's. This rivaled many of the truggy and buggy classes. I actually pulled off a 39-sec lap in qualifying, which I was stoked about. My Revo was running excellent all weekend. I managed to pull through with the TQ and win while Mike Battaile held onto a solid second place finish. Mark Holloway rounded off the podium in third place with Danny Reddish and Ricky Johnston finishing fourth and fifth respectively. The notable entries were Mark Holloway and Ricky Johnston, which were driving brushless-powered E-Revos. They were driving them quite fast, actually. Mark actually TQ'd one of the rounds in qualifying and was super fast with his E-Revo.

Conclusion

We had a great time at the first annual Wire Grass Indoor Nationals. I walked around the pits and met as many Traxxas owners as I could and was happy to find out everyone was enjoying their time and experience racing Slashes and Revos. I always enjoy traveling and meeting Traxxas customers. It's definitely my favorite part of the job. If you ever see me at an event, please feel free to come by, say hello, and ask any questions that you may have. Or just bench race, it's all good! We always enjoy helping and talking with you. Racing is a great way to meet new people and learn more about this great hobby of R/C cars and trucks. See you at the next one!
