The new Revo Constant-Velocity (CV) Driveshaft kit from Traxxas (#5451R) is an excellent upgrade for your Revo. These high quality driveshafts from Traxxas are specifically designed to get the most out of your Revo whether you’re at the track or just ripping around your favorite bashing spot. CV driveshaft joints have always been known for increased efficiency in getting power to the wheels, plus they offer improved strength for maximum reliability. When the Traxxas engineers went to the drawing board to design CV driveshafts for the ever-popular Revo, they decided to take it a step further than current CV driveshafts on the market. Not only are the new CV driveshafts manufactured from the best materials, but they were also designed to increase longevity and enhance the appearance of your Revo. These new shafts look outstanding and are very easy to install.
The basic principle of a Constant-Velocity (CV) Driveshaft is to minimize shaft wobble at the wheel versus typical universal joints. Universal joints are designed to maintain power deliver to the axle during the stroke of the suspension or when the front wheels are turned, but due to their design, friction and wobble is created as soon as the joint bends. This effect is amplified as the angle is increased. The wobble created by a universal joint robs your drive train of precious power and the high frequency shake it imposes can reduce traction between the wheels and the surface you are driving on. CV driveshaft joints reduce this effect tremendously. This increases axle speed and keeps your tires planted on the ground through the corners.
Until now, the stock rear CV driveshaft inner drive cups limited the use of the CV driveshafts to stock rear suspension arms. The new Traxxas extended drive cups (#5153R) keep the shaft located inside the cup when using the extended wheelbase suspension arms (#5333R). The extended wheelbase suspension arms are swept back to increase wheelbase, but this pulls the driveshaft away from its desired location inside of the drive cup. The extended drive cups are longer to compensate for this.
To install the new drive cup, simple pull the stock cup from the rubber boot and insert the extended one in its place. It’s a good idea to apply grease to the shaft end during installation to reduce wear. Make sure that the rubber boot is pushed back over the shaft and cup assembly to keep dirt from entering.
I recently tried out the new CV driveshafts and extended drive cups on my Platinum Revo to put them to the test. I entered my Revo into the Standard Monster Truck and the Truggy class at the third round of the Texas Nitro Invitational series held at Johnny Cool Guy Raceway. After four rounds of qualifying and 70 minutes of racing hard in the mains, the Traxxas CV driveshafts held up perfectly. That’s well over two hours of track time, including practice and warm-up. Racing two classes with the same truck can be very hard on all of the truck’s components, but my Platinum Revo equipped with the new CV driveshafts and extended drive cups took everything I could dish out, and I was not easy on it. I also noticed improved acceleration through the corners and a tighter steering radius. After a full weekend of pushing my Revo hard on the track, I examined the shafts and drive cups for damage or excessive wear and found no wear whatsoever. The shafts looked great and the drive cups were in as good of shape as they were when I’d installed them. I definitely recommend giving them a shot if you’re looking for that extra competitive edge. Keep in mind that the extended drive cups are not intended for use with the stock suspension arms as this can cause the shafts to bind. If you are using the stock rear suspension arms on your Revo, stick with the stock CV driveshaft drive cups. Happy racing!
