Yeah, there is a thread like this in the About Traxxas forum too.
My reasoning for it is so they sould get a picture of it doing a wheelie. It can obviously do wheelies, there are 4 or more videos that prove it, but to get a perfect picture of it like that is almost impossible with out the retaining wire.

that is the antenna, if you notice you don't see one sticking up. by having it drag, it makes it look better. duratrax did the same thing in their start up video

If that was the antenna, it would not be nearly as straight and high in tension as that wire is. They wanted a perfect wheelie pic, they had to use something to make it happen.

So the antenna is just running along the chassis past the tranny and engine, and still long enough to pass out the back of the truck by several inches?
I know the antenna isn't over 24 inches long.

There is smoke coming from the pipe...

Look below the "XX" of "T-Maxx."

Why is the image code OFF?

guys.. Have you ever trying taking the perfect picture? I have done a lot of things to make a picture do exactly as I want it too. They wanted a wheelie and so they didn't have to worry about blur, catching it in action, the set it up.. SO! Don't you think if the E-Maxx can do it with no strings attached, that the 2.5 could too.. Come on, what do you really think they are hiding? Let me tell you, nothing, it's just a way to make the picture the way they wanted it, that is all.

OK. let's put this string thing to rest with a lesson in photography.

One of the things that makes action photos look nice is to have sharp foreground and an out of focus background. In order to accomplish this you need to use a large (wide open) aperture on the camera (f2.8). The downside is you have a very, very, narrow depth of field. Depth of field is how much of the image is in focus. With large depth of field, the entire image is in focus. With a small depth of field, only a narrow slice of the image is in focus (for example the nose of a buggy is sharp but the rear tire is blurry). In order to capture the photograph on the hill, the driver has to hit his wheelie in an exact spot in order for the image to be in focus. The camera is pre-focused to that spot. Too close, or too far away from the camera, the image is out of focus. It all happens too quickly for the photographer to see it, focus it, and capture it live. R/C trucks are small and difficult to focus on. Even the autofocus on our very, very expensive camera is usually not quick enough to grab it. (Remember, that T-Maxx is seriously fast now with the new engine!) When that happens, we have to use some encouragement to allow us to capture the shot on film. In this case we put the truck on a leash which slowed it down enough to allow the photographer enough time to frame, check focus, and shoot the picture.

Are we embarrassed that we allowed this picture on the site? Sure we are. But it's just a production technique to get a photograph of something we know the truck will do, but were not having success capturing on film. For those of you hiding from the black helicopters hovering over your house, there's no conspiracy here or intent to deceive.

Does this mean that the T-Maxx won't do a wheelie as "advertised?" Absolutely not. It will wheelie up that dirt hill all day long. (quite violently I might add) All we did was improve the odds of capturing it on film without spending all day and 20 rolls of film hoping to get "that perfect shot." We wouldn't photograph it doing something it won't do out of the box. That just wouldn't be right. Look at the wheelie videos. These are definitely wheelies with "no strings attached."

Does Traxxas do this all the time? Of course not. We in fact take a great deal of pride in the action photography and videos we produce and they are authentic with only the minimal amount of "Photoshopping" to clean up the color, film grain, and defects from the scans.

Why did we take the image completely off the site? To avoid yet another thread on this subject with people arguing over whether we photoshopped the image or not. We decided to just remove the image and be done with it so we wouldn't have to explain this time and time again.

    Hope this helps

    Later,

    Mustang

i saw nothing wrong with using the string to get the 'perfect picture' but how come they didn't edit the string out?

You know, things get busy and the wrong version of a picture gets used. Happens to the best of us.

Mustang.. I'm a professional photographer and I completely understand why you did what you did and also how that photo slipped by. I occasionally miss things that have to be edited because I've looked at images too much so I have my staff proof my stuff. I appreciate Traxxas' honestly and candor in this issue. Goes to show, once again, good customer service (in being honest about it to everyone). Congratulations on your new developments. TNT

Johnny Ringo and I commented because we are tech guys and fully believed that there was no string there. How could there be when we tested the new motor and Maxx and knew what kind of power it had and how easy it was to wheelie! We had no knowledge of the string otherwise.

This also happened on Saturday and Sunday (a day when we are at home) when we didn't have Mustang's experience and knowledge in the world of photography avaialble.

Needless to say Ringo and I had foot in mouth disease come Monday morning! So....Johnny Ringo and I can admit when we are wrong and we were...wrong.

As a company and as employees we have commented on the now infamous picture. On that note I’m going to lock the thread and not delete it that way if anyone has any questions about the picture they can read our official response.
