There are a number of things that can cause a nitro engine to wear out. Nitro engines make lots of power at extreme RPM's, they have wildly erratic power loads and they are about 3 inches from the dirt. Running the wrong fuel or setting the needles too lean will cause overheating and premature wear. Getting dirt or dust in the engine will quickly ruin the piston and sleeve. An air leak in the system will cause excessive leaning of the fuel mixture and again lead to overheating. The life span of an engine is entirely dependant on how the engine is maintained. Nitro car engines can last up to 4 gallons or more, which is quite rare, and they can wear out in less than a gallon. Average engine life falls somewhere in between the two extremes.
I will say this Sandman,
My Sport is not prefectly maintained (I think I have only put after run oil in it once or twice, and I don't clean it off as often as I shuld), and I have well over a gallon of Nitro in it, and it STILL runs like a champ. Sometimes, when it is tuned right, it acts like it has TOO much power. If you treat the engine right, it will last long enugh for you to save up for a rebuild kit for it easily!
