    Question Another ESC Thread

My stock ESC nosedived, looking at my options. Stock is no longer an option for me and I tired of replacing 5 times over with stock and same problems.

Whats a good budget ESC to run with stock motor?

Whats a good long term ESC if I want to decide to go BB later but will also run stock motor?

If anyone was interested in trading for a set of big joes mounted what ESC would they offer?

I tried searching the forum but the advanced search is acting up

Five ESC's is a bit much. How long have you had the vehicle? And which vehicle do you have specifically?

Not too familiar with other brands, so I can't offer much advise there.

Have you sent in the ESC/motor or the vehicle to Traxxas so it can be evaluated? It seems like there may be something else going on because you shouldn't be replacing the ESC that many times.

Its been serviced 3 out of 5 times. The last two I bought new thinking was defect but I done with stock. Just like I done with the stock servo just deciding to quit working

The stock servo is crap, period. No repair will fix this issue. Get a hitec 5085mg or similar. Breaking the ESC 5 times is weird. I am loving my Mamba Max Pro, but if you run the stock engine and a single or parallel 2S, it's probably overkill.

Are you sure you are not accidentally using the series connector on 2*2S, making it 4S effectively? That would break the stock ESC for sure...

Those of you who continue to reference banned products do so at risk of your Traxxas forum memberships.

If you guys want a good waterproof esc that is still at a good price, take a look at the castle sidewinder sv3
With great brushless comes great responsibility.

    Another ESC Thread

Even a Castle Creations Sidewinder SV2/SCT is more than adequate for a 1:16 and runs the 380 motor well so long as you matchup the motor and ESC connectors.

I've been considering the et 3s from the funny car. Is it a good choice?

I see it listed as being programmed specifically for drag racing. What pelrogramming does it have, specifically, and will the esc link up to castle link like my mamba max?

I'm looking at upgrading my esc. The stocker has been a trooper as it hits thermal cutoff quite a bit and still works.

I'm looking for something that will handle 3s better and allow me to play with 1/10 motors if I ever decide to.

I know it isn't waterproof. I stay away from water anyway.

I had a got2go esc that could handle 4s lipo. Had it for 3 yrs, until I had to go faster with too tall gearing... Smoked it. My work has a huge parking lot. So It handled a lot of abuse with 2s,3s,4s lipo before I killed it. I now have got2go esc/motor combo. Working great.(haven't checked if 75mph is for real), If it is anything like his batteries and last esc it will be flying for years. I am in no way affiliated, but of all the batts Iv'e had his are the best. 4 yr old 3s, not maintained properly still outpulls and last any battery in my arsenal. My 5cents

I believe you have to go with a Sidewinder 3 or the Sidewinder SCT with the fan for the waterproof feature.

Well my new esc died. Proper gearing tuned and up in smoke after a short run. So no more got2go. I am looking at the sidewinder sct, but it says only 2s lipo. Can it handle 3s on our cars? I run 2s and 3s on mine occasionally 2s in parallel. Does it matter that the above escs are for 1/10 cars as far as setup?

Get the SW3 non sct and it is rated for 3s.

Ok. I see it says 15volts max. Can 4s be run safely with the SW3?

    4S = 16.8 volts.
Whatever it is I just said... I could be wrong.

Thats like asking If you can run 20 ton truck over the bridge which limit is 15 tons.
Nobody can tell you that because it varies from ESC to ESC, even the same model. It highly depends on the quality of the material used.
Unfortunately, there is only one way to find out

Voltage limitations are a lot different than amperage limitations. If 2S is the max, anything higher will fry it. I've seen undersized ESC's survive due to creative gearing solutions to keep amp draw to a minimum, but I've never seen a ESC survive being over volted.

Ok. I didn't even think about the amps. But I thought 2 2s in series was 14.8. Pretty sure I am not going to try it. I ordered the S3. so I will probably be on the forum when it comes time to set it up.

Retired Vet, what did you end up getting?

    Twin 2S in series = 4S.
Each cell fully charged = 4.2 volts.
    4.2 x 4 = 16.8 volts

Oh. Why are 2s rated or advertised as 7.4? I took it that 2x7.4 was only 14.8. That is why I asked if the S3 could handle it. That could get people,(like me), in trouble.

The red, white, and black wires go in any order it takes for the motor to spin the RC forward. If it doesn't, swap any two.

Brushless motors work just like a 3phase electric motors. You have 2 phase legs and a wild leg. And the wild leg is always in the middle. Color doent matter.

Yes you can. Castle Link plugs into the Rx cable (orange/red/brown wire).

Yes, I changed the 3.5mm bullets to 4mm bullets to match the sidewinder ESC.

Neu motors are pricey but extremely good. If you go bb I suggest an outrunner motor to keep the weight down. I k ow that atleast one guy on here is using one.

On the S3 ESC the wires to receiver are yellow red and brown. Brown goes where the black wire would go is what I am guessing?
