If there's a will, there's a way! I'm not saying that it cannot be done, just that I haven't seen anyone do it. People have installed the Velineon system in their Blast before, though. One thing to watch out for with that setup is that it's a little fast for the hull (harder to control).

You'd have a hard time getting two of those linked together.

The factory u-joint is fairly strong when you have the surface drive positioned so that the u-joint is straight (when you're not giving any steering input). If you can find a 4mm Graupner u-joint, those are even better; they're quieter (less friction) and more durable.

Oh, I didn't say that it couldn't be done! I can think of a way to do it that might work by drilling a hole in the joint, tapping some threads, and using a set screw/pin (and red thread lock) to hold it together. But that would still be a pain. Keeping an eye on the plastic joints and replacing them when needed would be a heck of a lot easier.

As for the batteries, that depends. If you're using Li-Po batteries, you should run a low voltage alarm so that you know when the batteries are getting low. If you're using Ni-Mh cells, you'll know when they're running out of juice (you'll notice the voltage drop).

On that note, it's never recommended to swim for an R/C boat.

Not a problem. It's nice seeing some activity here in the Blast sub-forum!

quick question; what would be better for the blast; a castle creations 3800kv sct sidewinder or a velineon 3500 vxl?

im willing to make both waterproof; there both out of the warranty lol. thanks for the help!

just got it last night and went to fit in my velineon, but my wires werent long enough! had to put in my 4 pole 3800kv sidewinder sct in it. lol. im eventually going to upgrade the u joints...
question though; what is the little thingy on the side of the water pick up? it looks like it could hold something like the rudder from a spartan.... can i make a dual water pickup from doing that?

and also; what size is the tubing?

I not really sure what that is for, but you could probably find a way to mount a second water pickup between those pieces of plastic.

The tubing is just the standard size (medium). Standard nitro fuel tubing would also work if you wanted different colors.

I've never actually paid attention to the size, so I'm not entirely sure. But that's probably fairly close.

Good color choice. I see so many people paint boats dark colors only to find out that a dark colored boat is hard to see on the water!

I have a Traxxas blast, and I'm having trouble finding an ESC for it,
And because the blast forums are basically dead, id like to ask a question here.

I have a castle creations 1410 3800kv 4 pole motor, and I need an esc to run In my boat.

    1. Should I even be running this?
    2. Planning on running 2s. Could I do more? Or only do NimH?
    3. What amp esc should I be running?
    4. Lastly; if I shouldn't run this, what do you recommend?

    Thanks!

Usually people go with lower KVs around 1800 or so because it's direct drive. There's no opportunity to gear it down so your prop and shaft will be spinning really fast which is tough on them. Most people use a HobbyWing SeaKing 180amp ESC if they don't use the stock ESC. Also, that motor is rated for 2s max. I know people have run them on 3s but it's not recommended by Castle. If I were you, I'd get the Leopard 4082 motor and SeaKing 180 amp ESC and sell your Castle motor or save it for another land-based application. The cooling ribs on the Castle can don't lend themselves to using a cooling jacket either, which is pretty much required in a boat.

Technically you can use any ESC you want but it will get hot without water cooling. Just be sure to get a very low pitched prop so you don't over work the motor

Hey guys! Just thought I'd give you an update on what I did to my u joints.

I noticed some extra slash 4x4 parts, and I thought about it.

And then I ended up with this!

So I now have an aluminum driveshaft in the center. Much better than those plastic u joints! Still haven't gotten to run it yet though ):

Nice setup, any more details on how you did it (part numbers, etc.)?

Well I know I used the center drive shaft (TRA6855), and I had to use the gray piece that connects to the driveshaft and spur/slipper clutch (TRA6888 x2).

    So just those two parts!

so, even though ive been told that i shouldnt use this motor, im saying whatever and putting this motor into it. i put in a castle 1410 3800kv 4 pole motor. people are saying i shouldnt because its not meant to push a mass. but, this motor has a butt load of torque, and i think itll be fine. i have an aftermarket esc (turningy 160a car esc, ill be waterproofing it later). so that will push enough amperage into it. what do you think?

also; do you know where i can get an aluminum cooling plate for real cheap? thanks!

I know I'm bringing up an old thread and shouldn't be, but I thought I'd show you where I'm at with my blast currently.
Fully custom with a modded drive train for heavy torque ready, using the mod I showed before and the Traxxas 4628x yokes, I got it basically bullet proof running a 3260kv motor and 3s lipo.
