    Changed gears, now runs hot!

Hi all, I recently changed my gears over to the 17 tooth bell clutch and 38t spur gear. Ran it for the first time and it had great top speed, very happy with it running on my local oval.

But after bout half a tank of fuel I noticed minor smoke coming from engine (around the cooling fins) so I turned off and rested it. After 30min I tried again, same thing happened.

I'm a little worried that changing the teeth may have changed something I'm unaware of. Do I need to re tune motor? It was great on standard tooth set up, only change is gearing.

The only other thing that I think it could be is that I cleaned the motor with a rag covered in Wd40 after changing gears over. It could be burning off that oil??

I have a thermometer does any one know what temperature it should be after half a tank flat out running???

Thanks guys, I'm a bit worried to run it without some further investigation.

    Cheers

The engine temps need to stay under 270deg, I try to keep mine between 240-250. I get the best performance and longest engine life with those temps. If it stays under 210-220, that will cause problems to.

You may have good top speed but that engine is working to push those gears. If your tune is good, gear down a bit and see what happens to the temps.

You didn't really gain anything goin from 15/36 to 17/38
Go to 17/36 and try that for more top end....

If I changed to 17/36 would this 'hurt' the engine more than it is now?

It's more than you might think. He went from a 2.4:1 ratio to a 2.23:1. That's a good 5mph or more with enough power.

Yeah I'm no good with maths, but I do know I did notice a difference in top speed. I did also notice it had hard time dropping back to first gear when it spun out etc. So it cannot be exactly the same as before if you go on my observations.

Yes and it would be 2.12:1 if you went 17/36
