Really, what happened to that thing. Looks like it got too hot then dropped into cold water.

It is overheated, you can get just the rotor, and replace it with the rebuild kit.

Looks like it probably tore the wires up too.

Yeah it tore up some of the wires on inside :/ I saw somewhere that traxxas will send me a new one for $15 plus $5 shipping or is the 15 a minimum cost of replacement.

Yeah I checked the temps after it suddenly stopped moving and it was only 115f and I've heard that it goes up to 200 without a problem. Could an impact have caused the magnet to explode?

Thats crazy I have never seen that before lol I doubt a impact could shatter it like that. But I guess the motor does hang off the back. What I would do Is replace it and get a rpm rear bumper.

Could this have been a faulty magnet? And does anyone know how much traxxas will charge to replace it?

Depends on the age of the unit as to if it will be warrantied. I've seen several Velinion motors do that in the past couple of months, but none where newer. The magnets are glued to the shaft and they break off with that being the result. looking at that picture, the motor looks very rusty.. How much time has it spent under water? All the ones I've seen are almost new, clean looking not like that.. but it just may be the lighting in the picture. Over heating the motor usually will weaken the magnets themselves, but it can and will weaken the glue holding the magnets in place as well. Give Traxxas a shot.. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

The rust-looking stuff just smudges off. But the motor is well over its 30 day warranty but it looked as if traxxas had a lifetime warranty thing. I'm going to call them and see what's up with it and I hope I can get one for less. :/ as with the heat, people have said that it goes up to 175-200 before it fries and this one was only at 115.

I understand it was only at 115 when it broke.. what was it at on previous runs? Not saying it was overheated.. just curious.

You can see the rust where the bearings ride. I bet they seized, and everything heated way up and... meltsplosion...

    only 115??? Not buying it.

The rust is honestly not an issue. If I take the magnets off and put it back into the motor and spin it, it spins for a while.

I could pick the motor up after it stopped and it felt a good amount hotter than a hot tub but not burning hot and telemetry said 47deg C. I guess I have ridden it pretty hot other times so that might have brittled the magnet. :/

Yes, every once in a while, for some reason, I will post something, and it will repeat. Some quirk with the computer or something.

Oh sir, the rust is most definitely a HUGE issue. It shows that the motor was neglected. If the surface of the armature shaft looks like that, the bearings surely are toast. They might spin at 100 rpm, but under load and at 25,000 rpm there def will be drag, causing overheating and pow, puzzle pieces of magnet. Those bearings are high precision, with very tight tolerances. Anything that gets in there will cause all kinds of havoc. Never put it away wet.

Do you think traxxas will replace it? Not for free but for less than buying a new motor?

Yes. the lifetime replacement plan should cover it for around $40 I think.

That's great oh and I just checked the bearings and they don't move at all -.- when I get the new motor I'm definitely going to buy a few dozen cans of elec motor cleaner and wd-40 :P
