Unfortunately, the title is true. My MERV CAUGHT ON FIRE TODAY. Actual flames and a meltdown. I'm not certain what caused it, maybe even I am to blame.
So here's what happened:
I was off work and taking care of our baby upstairs till my wife got home. She came in the door and I could hear her put her keys down and start to walk up the steps to us. I hear her yell for me. "Something's burning!" I hear her scurry down the steps. A moment passed and she yells again, "Wes, something's burning down here." I'm scanning my brain about what it could be, but I'm coming up blank. I didn't have the oven or the iron on down there. I'd just gotten home and I hadn't used anything hot.
I hear her open the basement door and start down those steps. In the meanwhile, I'm grabbing the baby and coming down to help. Down the first flight, I could smell smoke. It smelt like burning plastic. Down into the basement, the smoke was visible but we could tell that it was coming from the garage and my car.
I'm making moves to push the car out of the garage, just in case we don't catch this thing quick enough. ( No use in burning my car and the house)
Halfway out of the garage my wife can see in the back seat. "Your RC car! It's on fire!" Sure enough, my MERV is sitting in my back seat with flames on it.
If my wife hadn't come in at just the right moment, it could have been far worse.
Yes, my batteries were still plugged in. I'd run it just about 24 hours prior and I figured that they were about spent. I am running two 3 cell.
