    click

i was driving my 1 16 summit when all of the son on take off it would just make one loud click i don't know if it's the diff or what it is. it sounds like plastic striping but i took the whole truck apart(diffs, trans) and i couldn't find anything wrong with it.

Even the slightest chip or rounding of diff gears can cause a click.
Whatever it is I just said... I could be wrong.

Maybe your steering Servo stripped a gear?

Does it drive or not? One loud click and then it's fine?

sounds like a chipped tooth somewhere, probably the rear diff.

i've checked every gear in the truck and know that there is no missing teeth and the diff has no play for it to strip.

Is there any debris in the gear?
I once had a click and it ended up being a small (and I mean tiny) rock in the gear. I could not see it until I scraped every tooth out with a needle.

+1. It is amazing how small the damage on a diff or the piece of debris in a spur can be, compared to the amount of noise that is produced.

i shimmed my diff and i still clicked when it was shimmed so it took it back out and it was quieter. but i noticed that my gears were rounding over and chipping. Should i buy a rebuild kit or a whole diff?

    Some have 1, 2, 3, 4, and even 5.
The point is, it is impossible to tell how many shims you are going to need. This is explained in my bulkhead thread:
