Any brushed motor you want to add should work you may have to solder new plug ins on your motor or esc

According to Traxxas, the xl-5 esc can safely run a 15 turn (540 motor) or a 12 turn (550 motor). I personally have run as low as an 11 turn mod motor with no issues. ESC never even got warm.

The 12t has more top end
    15t has more accelaration

Yes, the xl-5 can run anything higher than a 12T 550 or 15T 540. The lower the turn number, the hotter the motor. So a Stinger or a 27T stock motor is way below the xl-5's rated limits.

When comparing a 540 motor to another 540 motor, yes, the lower the number, the more RPM it will turn at the cost of some torque. But if comparing a 15T 540 motor to a 12T 550 motor, the 12T should produce more torque due to the physically larger motor.
