    rustler vxl on 3s

New here and needing some help. I fly rc helis but the kids are getting into trucks so i picked up a rustler vxl. I have a ton of 3s 4000mah lipos that i would like to use. My question is can i use one of the stock gearings that came with the truck or is there a better option? I love fast but want to be safe with temps at the same time. Thanks for any help you guys can give me. Oh and i will only be on road. Stock tires now but getting j concept g locs

the stock gearings will be fine..especially on the road..
on the road the temperatures are usually lower than on rough surfaces

Use wise throttle control and you'll be okay with stock on 3S. Now, if you go with the taller pinion, you might cause overheating issues.

Another thought: you can always use training mode to cut the power in half.

Thanks guys! 28 pinion that came with it would give me more speed right? Also any other sizes that would give me better reults than stock please let me know. I did go ahead and make an air vent over the esc and have a fan on order and lowered it with the fuel tube mod.

If you have air vents and fans in place, then go ahead and try out the 28 tooth. With a 3S on a 28t, i believe you should hit around 55-60.

Since its just an on-road car, also consider adding weight. I added an 8oz strip of steel underneath the chassis in the middle. The lowered cog helps the handling a lot. Then, if I want very fast speed runs, I put another 8oz on top of the upper chassis under the front shock tower.

If you run the 28 pinon you'll hv to watch temps with the 3s lipos & if you don't hv a temp gun get one . I'm running 3s 25c 50000 mah power cell with 21/86 gears with 2.2 tire an my speed is about 47/50 mph also hv on board temp gauge .

Do yourself a favor and if you dont already have a temp gun get one. Temps are the biggest deciding factor when choosing a gear ratio. Driving style also plays a big role so a gearing that works for me might over heat the motor for someone else. Monitor motor and ESC temp and use the temps as a guide line along with desired performance to determine what gearing will work best for you and how and where you drive.

The magnets in the motor will be damaged around 200F, most people will stop running at a lower temp like around 180 or so give or take. The ESC will thermal at around the same 200 mark.

I tried out a 3S Lipo on mine for the first time last week. It is very difficult to control, even with the Anacondas on it. They pancake and the Rustler has a very sloppy feel to it at 3/4 to Full throttle. Neat though!

Tape your tires to keep them from ballooning. It works like a charm!

Sweet video! Learn something new everyday. I'll try that on my next set to tires/wheels. Thanks, Zippo...

Tried out the 83 spur and 28 pinion and had some fun till I stripped the spur. Went ahead and lossened the slipper a bit and
tried the 76 spur 31 pinion and don't think I ever made it to full throttle because I ran out of street in a hurry. Going to go back with the 83/28 and have fun. Thanks for the help guys
