ERBE overheating NIMH batteries.

I just got a used ERBE and its awesome! After running the Erevo for around 10 minutes doing speed runs on the pavement, I stopped the truck for inspection. The 8.4v 7cell NIMH batteries were so hot, they started to melt the plastic wrap off the batteries. The batteries are name brand and are about 2 months old. The esc is set a factory default with the low voltage turned off since they are not lipo. Any idea why the batteries would do this?

The system is really designed for lipo.batteries. the nimh don't supply enough juice

Traxxas use to sell the system with NIMH batteries correct?

And NiMHs do get hot, due to the high internal resistance of NiMH cells and the huge currents demanded by the esc.

I just checked the gearing. Its 18/54. I'm guessing I should change it to 18/65? Will it make that much difference? Thanks guys!

Yep 18/54 is a good gearing for 4S lipo. NiMH i would totally recommend 18/65

Castle does not recommend nimh with the 2200
I tried mine for 5 minutes went to lipo and never looked back!I have 4 of them sitting around collecting dust

yes going back to stock gearing 18/65 will help with the temps. the MMM will be much happier too..
it will be even happier with Lipos...

Thanks 87 GN. Im sure I will be going lipo. Its going to be a few months though. I run lipo in my stampede vxl and its a beast. The MMM is running cool even though the batteries are way too hot.

The Nimhs just dont cut it. Even easy on the throttle they just dont have the capacity to supply enough current. The 18/65 will make it not as bad but still bad all the same and the truck will seem lame not even making 30mph.
