Ring and pinion question

Is the ring and pinion a common item to break in the emaxx brushless ? I broke mine today and not looking forward to replacing it

I broke mine twice. Really needs some aluminum cups but can't spend the hundred plus for them right now!
Shimming will help but a loose slipper will help more

loosen the slipper a little more perhaps, reduce take offs like no full throttle take offs, no jumping or cartwheels those will cause a stripped or even a broken diff.

both stock diffs on mine went after about 10 runs mostly 4s a couple 6s. both times it was the little bearing that failed. I rebuilt them with alum. cups and cases and avid bearings. Only run it a couple of times since so time will tell.

i am using 6s batteries (i know its a lot of power, but i love it) 24/68 is the gearing i am running. i thought putting a 24 pinion would help cause of less torque but i guess i was wrong. the truck wheelies like crazy so i think i am going to loosen the slipper a bit after i rebuild it. the funny thing is i have been running the truck for about 6 months with hpi phaltline tires which are street tires and should have more traction but yesterday when i put the stock tires back on they were a ton more grippy and would do back flip wheelies and in just 3 runs it broke, so im pretty sure thats why my ring and pinion broke.

LOL that is funny. What I was trying to say was just take it a little easy to prevent having to replace diffs every time you take it out. I drive mine a little harder lately but watch out it doesn't cartwheel and hit something real hard.

My 2c. Am running 6s, my truck takes a fair bit of abuse, still have stock diffs, diff cases etc. Only thing I did to my diffs was shim them properly. With properly shimmed diffs, unless you really really go crazy your diffs should hold up well.

What do you mean by shim them properly?

Basically you pull the Diff apart and add some shims where required. NOTE: Not every Diff will be the same, it is a trial and error approach until there is no "binding" when you turn any of the Diff shafts. Check this out as it shows you the basics. Although this is for a Losi Diff, the principles are the same. MITCH316 ERBE rebuild

After I shimmed my standard diffs, I never had a problem with them. I heard a clicking sound and figured it was the front diff (the original diff I blew before realising I should have shimmed them), pulled it apart and it was like new. Not a problem at all. So the diffs can definitely handle a decent load as I always run 6S, but they have to be shimmed or you'll just snap teeth off them constantly.

The clicking sound I was hearing was teeth missing from the servos

im still a little confused on the shimming process. where do you get the shims? are they just metal washers? do you use the shims so there is less slack in the diff? what holds the shims in place, the driveshafts? sorry for my ignorance but i will be taking my rear end apart this weekend and installing a new diff want to do it right

The shims come in different thicknesses and what is going to hold the diff is the case and the diff inside. The purpose of the shim is so there is no excess movement from the diff inside the case when this happens the diff gets too far away from the pinion gear inside and the diff since its connected to the drive shafts keeps spinning while the pinion is not moving causing when the gears contact to miss and grind down teeth on either or break off. You can buy The shims at towerhobbies. Amainhobbies, rcplanet or the lhs. Not sure though on part #

On my e maxx all I need was a pinion shim
Here is the exploded view. You place a shim on the ring gear side between the ring gear and the bearing. Assemble the case and turn the pinion. It should be fairly smooth. Mine didn't need one. Keep adding shims until its too tight then take one out
Then place a shim on the pinion between the pinion and the inside bearing. Do the same as the ring gear.
Sometimes the pinion has too much clearance and with too many shims brings the pinion in too much and the pin for the driveshafts wont line up. Remove a shim until you can get the pin in

Well I installed another rear diff and did not shim it and it blew of course so I am going to try the shim thing but I had one question before I buy all the shims. You linked me to 2 different 10mm shims do I need to purchase both of them? I understand I need the 6mm and the 8mm but what 10mm do I need thanks for all the help

You only need one of them, either will work.

If I remember right one of them was not in stock when I posted it, the Yokomo kit has 3 different size shims in it the Ofna only has one size.

So I could just get one yokomo kit? When you say the yokomo has three different sizes you mean 3 different thicknesses of 10mm. Not 6mm,8mm, and 10mm right

Are you just replacing the ring &pinion. Aluminum cup and case would be a good upgrade and I would reshim it after the first few rides after they break in a bit
