RC Snowmobiles ? "My 40 Year old DREAM" ...by Jordan Krupp

Hi Everyone, my name is Jordan Krupp and I live in Ontario Canada, the "North Country". I was raised on a farm in the 60's and many of my parents friends had snowmobiles and brought these amazing fun machines to our farm because we had 100 acres of snow in the winter-time !
As a child I collected every toy snowmobile I could and my brother became interested in COX model airplanes ! You may see where I am going with this ? So in 1974 COX actually made a Ski-doo TNT Silver Bullet toy snowmobile with an .049 NITRO ENGINE ! I begged my Mom to get me one for Christmas that year and I was blessed at Christmas with the coolest toy EVER ! I wore that thing out and it lasted about 3 winters before the fuel wrecked the plastics !
    The years went by and I finally decided in 1980 to break down and buy a cheap drill press and basic hand tools and start building my "Dream Come True" and teach myself how to design and fabricate my own RC Snowmobile because NOTHING was in my local hobby shop that resembled an RC Snowmobile ! [RCS}

I became pretty good at cutting and filing aluminum and making these things work and always used a .21 nitro car engine because they were the best and still are and they had the proper clutch designs I needed !

I always had a deep passion for reading about the latest racing snowmobiles and these guys were my hero's along with the factories that designed and built these amazing race sleds, still are to this day ! So I had something to scale my latest RCS project to and proceeded to build the latest Oval Track Race Sled at the time and that was the revolutionary Ski-Doo F-1 Twin Track Factory oval machine ! When I finally built what I envisioned, I took this RCS to the an actual full size snowmobile race here in Ontario Canada and showed it to a racer ! I was so nervous and young but very proud and to my total amazement the word about my scale RCS spread like wild fire in the pits amongst the racers ! I was escorted into the Factory sponsored race transporter and had to explain my creation, much to my total amazement ! I cant explain how overwhelming this all was being praised by WORLD SNOWMOBILE CHAMPIONS ! I was 23 years old and these were guys I deeply admired and here they were thrilled at what I built from scratch ! I felt like a very humble celebrity and was asked to run the model on the front straight during the break in action, on Saturday and Sunday in front of about 3000 people ! The OS Max .21 worked perfect and my Kraft KP3 wheel radio did too ! I got a standing ovation as the sled screemed back and forth on the main start finish straight in front of the grand-stands !

Anyway, Long Story Short, I am still doing this as a hobby, I sell the odd RCS model but it is so much work even though these are simpler than an rc car, only 8 bearings max ! I am building the latest Arctic Cat ProCross sled that Tucker Hibbert, the Factory Sponsored racer rides, in 1/3rd scale and he is currently dominating the AMSOIL TRAXXAS SnowCross Series on !

So, My Question Is ? When Can "We" walk into our local hobby shop and buy what I wanted in 1980 ?
I watched the latest Traxxas sponsored race and the podium had RC Trucks on display ! I hope one day soon these could be replaced with an RCS ! Makes sense to me and I have hundreds of passionate people that want me to sell them an RCS from my website, RC Snowmobiles.com and a short video on YouTube "Jumping rc snowmobile".

I also race 8th scale Nitro Buggies and was a 2 Time RC Pro Champion here in Ontario and won 2 titles with my Awesome Nitro Revo before the class became obsolete ! Loved That Revo !!! So Reliable and FUN !!!

Thanks For Reading My Story !

Thank You Upbasher ! Your praise cant get any better than this ! Im glad You see my goal too ! The fact is i have a hard time making all the parts by hand and to do a limited build is also very hard, although I am doing 6 of the latest Arctic Cat sleds that are raced on the Amsoil Traxxas series, one day I would love nothing more than to be able to walk into my local hobby shop and buy a decent RCS !

I am not trying to promote "Myself" by posting on here only the "CONCEPT" of a properly designed RC Snowmobile and seeing that Traxxas is a MAJOR SPONSOR of the best [in my opinion] race series in North America I am trying to educate and promote and hopefully generate interest from Traxxas to consider looking into this fantastic possibility for the snowmobile and RC industry ! Perhaps I could be a "consultant" ? I am aloud to dream right ?

I feel, ONLY TRAXXAS has the ability to meet the needs and dreams of thousands of people that have the same idea and TRAXXAS is already in the exact position they need to be to make this happen ! Oh To Dream !

I really admire this company ! I was never crazy about Monster Trucks, being a "die-hard" 8th scale racer for 20 year now but when my Great Friend Martin Petre [now passed on] let me try his Nitro Revo I was hooked ! I bought one and raced it for TWO YEARS and never had to take apart a diff or anything, only the clutch once or twice ! I won the MT Title both years with that awesome truck ! .... More to Come ! Many Thanks !

Welcome to the forums. 1/3rd scale? That's HUGE! Living here in Buffalo, I would totally buy one.

Do you do scale models of the riders as well? That would have to be a major challenge...

Considering the fact that Traxxas has never let anyone know what's coming up next.... Who knew they were going to go into Heli's? Not ME?

But Traxxas does listen, I've seen it with the changes they made to revised models and other things... So you just never know...

Hi Zip ! Thanks ! The 1/3 scale Arctic Cats that I am currently building will be 38" long and the 1/4 scale ones are 30".
The 1/4 scale Cats I built are much like an 8th scale buggy in performance, especially jumping as they react much like a buggy in the air, tapping the brakes to bring the nose down or blipping the throttle to get the front-end up ! The 2009 Cat in 1/4 scale is pretty fast too and super durable ! Very Realistic, as thats my goal !
Making the rider is pretty straight forward and it really helps to protect the model ! The "scale rider" has a simple piano wire "skeleton" that maintains its shape but also absorbs impacts no problem ! Around this is a sponge foam "body" for the "human shape" and then I sew pants and a jacket by hand. Super light weight racing vac-formed helmet and boots along with all the sleds body parts.

You should check out the AMSOIL ISOC race on Feb 22-24 in Salamanca NY ! I really wanted to go but I shattered my ankle last week and will be on crutches for 6-8 weeks !

"Arctic Cat Jumping RC Snowmobile" on You Tube is the 1/4 scale with an OS Speed 21 that I built in 2010 ! Check er out ! and Thanks !

Wow ! This is the kind of encouragement this project needs ! Thanks and spread the word but just remember who the RC Snowmobile Guy is ! Haha ! It would be so much easier to buy one than build one but I really enjoy building too !

    Thanks for Your Words !

Hey Travis, Snow is white [most of the time] and cold ! I have never seen Florida, only on TV ! Lucky Duck !

Zippogeek ! Thanks for posting that video ! I have no clue how to do that, I build models and mountain bike, when I didn`t have a smashed ankle !

Pause the video around 45 seconds in and You can see how this sled Whips and comes back naturally ! That jump was about 25ft in distance and the take-off was at almost a 45 degree angle to the small jump and it was super cold out ! a tad lean on the bottom-end caused the higher idle.... Thank You Kindly for posting !

Hey daveOObear ! Thats pretty neat ! They were one of the coolest sleds especially the RUPP NItro's ! I remember as kid buying all the snowmobile magazines I could afford in the 70's and Sam Sessions raced the RUPP Nitro sleds ! I sure liked those and they are a very hot collector sleds now a days ! I actually started making a couple little RUPP Nitro RCS models in 1/5 scale, now just to finish them along with a couple other projects !

An RC Snowmobile by TRAXXAS sure would be good but what concerns me about a potential company marketing an RCS is that they don't invest huge money on injection moulding !

The video that Zippogeek posted [post 9] it was about -15degrees C !!! Pause the video at 45 or 58 seconds in !

We have had ALMOST every type of RC model including submarines and surfers ! It seems to me that most RC companies "play it safe" and almost dictate what You or I buy, they tell us "what is cool" and so now, look how many have COPIED the Short Coarse Truck market ? Look how many companies build 8th scale buggies ? Look how many different RC Airplanes and Helis are on the market ? Snowmobilers ? Makes a guy like me pretty sad !

Back when I had this "vision" or childhood fascination with snowmobiles and decided it was HIGH TIME to build one myself because thats what I wanted and only one company, ATOMIC, from Sweden offered an RCS in 1980. I couldn't understand why there wasn't a company that could do it right ?! Every RCS attempt to this date has been "substandard" to say the least ! It is not "rocket science!"

Check These Numbers and tell me if You think there is a market in just, THE SNOWMOBILE INDUSTRY ALONE !!!

    The economic impact of snowmobiling,

    United States - $ 23 Billion Annually
    Canada - $ 7 Billion Annually
Europe & Russia - $ 4 Billion Annually ..... Interesting numbers from my point of view !

I really think traxxas could make a very profitable business decision to produce these sleds. I would absolutely buy one, or two.
I mean, they are just awesome. period.
They could make nitro and electric versions. Brushed/brushless, or 3.3 nitro.
They would be most likely the most fun rc vehicle you could get.
I have spent countless hours trying to mod a new bright rc sled and it is just a waste of time. it will never work as good as Jordan's sled here.
    Please traxxas make them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

Upbasher ! Its RC guys like You that have a clear understanding of the concept being proposed and I Thank You for your insight and moral support, very cool ! You know ? Im like You, I would buy a couple of them also !
Just like many RC cars and Trucks, that are offered in Nitro or Electric, same chassis with slight mods ! Right On ! Also, tell me what vehicle in the world of "Full-Size" motorsports starts an engine with a RECOIL STARTER ? Thats Right ! A SNOWMOBILE ! Just like so many nitro engines on the RC market !
I also have one of the New Brite rc sleds and bought it with the same idea in mind and just like You Upbasher..... Well after I tried it, I put it back into the box. There is a couple of these hand-made "conversions" on YT and they work pretty good but I would not want to try a 20 or 30 foot jump with one ! Beautiful detail but it is all injection moulded plastic and I bet it is just as heavy as my 1/4 scale nitro Arctic Cat at 7 lbs !

I have spent hundreds, maybe thousands of hours studying racing vehicles in general because thats one of my passions, so i always try to incorporate the latest trends and design ideas into my next projects, whether it is "mass-centralization", suspension concepts and geometry or making it simpler yet more effective, there is always something to improve on.

Ten years ago in 2003, BRP-SKI-DOO, one of the four major snowmobile companies completely redesigned the the snowmobile. What they did was move the rider ONE FOOT forward and raised the seat height, basically made it better suited ergonomically for stand-up racing and performance ! They killed two birds with one stone along with other huge improvements on the snowmobile design. All the other snowmobile manufacturers followed that lead ! So when I incorporated these design elements into my next generation of RC Snowmobile models, i noticed a big improvement also !

The RC Market also has something to improve on too ! So with 227 "views" on this thread so far, I hope some influential people at the good company of TRAXXAS are following it and maybe some of these viewers could offer their opinions also ? It would be very much appreciated and add to the topic !

Google "snowmobiles" watch ANY videos to broaden your understanding of this awesome sport !

    Thanks !

    Video Evidence

Jordan, how are you. I bumped to to a friend of your's in the Peg. Dale George. I told him we were pals, he said "I have known Jordan for 40 Years." I was trying tell him I have tried to help.
There is not a time I film RC and snow and I don't think of you. I think your sleds are fantastic.
This clip was lost but is found again. It shows everyone how fantastic your snowmobiles are.
I looked up this clip when two guys walked into Eliminator RC and asked if they had any snowmobiles.
I have seen this happen many times in the seven years RC-TV has been on the air. I have heard it in PEI, I have heard it in BC at RC Pit Stop, I have heard it in Ontario at John's Hobbies. I even had two
snowmobiler's from Minnesota stop by place in North Bay when they saw me playing with an
E-MAXX in the snow and comment, "It is to bad no one makes a decent RC snowmobile."
I am sure a good RC snowmobile would sell well.

Best of luck. I will call you when I get back to Ontario.

    Hey Jordan
Ryan here from Eliminator-rc , your sleds are truly unique and are absolutely deadly. I know here in Winnipeg I would have a huge market for your sled because we get a fair mount of snow and I get 10-15 people every day that come in call or email about rc snowmobiles that actually work. I am amazed that some one has not worked with you to get the ball rolling to give the rc community what it needs and wants " Real rc snowmobiles that can jump and work in the snow."

Hope something becomes of this soon .

Wow ! Guys ! Im overwhelmed once again ! Look at all the SWEET Rupp sleds !

Nicholas, Thanks so much for the footage from RCTV ! That was a fun day hangin with Your crew and all the other winter RCers and my good friend Ron Prinzen for driving the other 1/4 scale Cat that day !
I have to give Dale George a huge amount of credit for making so much of "My Dream" happen ! Back many years ago in the mid eighties I finally got into 8th scale nitro cars and when i found a group of guys in Kitchener Ontario that got together and raced around in a parking lot for fun I met Dale and as fate would have it Dale bought all of John Thorpes 8th scale nitro clutch inventory ! I couldn't believe it because in 1980 I bought my first Thorpe clutch and paid $60 for it and it is a true variable belt drive clutch that still works so good ! Amazing Design to this day ! So Dale and I became "Instant friends!" and we eventually built many RC Models together and I became employed by Dale to help design and build RC snowmobiles, the Lil Zipper 1/3 scale Go Kart, a 1/3 scale 6 wheel ARGO amphibious vehicle, a YAMAHA VMAX 4 for Yamaha Canada in 1/3 scale and a 1/6 scale fully functional SKY-Jack scissor lift for the companies showroom and trade shows. Dale taught me about building jigs, moulds and how vacuum forming worked ! Dale was and still is pretty darn smart as he designed the worlds first plastic playground equipment and one of the worlds first cordless electric lawn mowers ! He also designed and built an amazing device for swimmers and scuba divers called the Aqua Ray ! The funniest thing, he became good buddies with the well know Top Fuel Drag Racer Todd Patton and so built an 8th scale 21 powered Nitro Funny Car that had scale headers all shooting out loud exhaust power ! That car was trick and solid ! Very "scale" too, just like the new TRAXXAS Funny car but Dale made a complete scale chassis just like the Patton car ! I still work for the company Dale founded many years ago, Mobile Airships here in Brantford Ontario. My hat is off to Dale George !

Hi Ryan ! Thanks so much for your praise and admiration for my RC Snowmobiles ! Yes ! Your stories sound so familiar to me, almost too much ! When I hear this, it makes me think so many decision makers or marketing people in the RC Industry have not really studied the feasibility of this untapped market !? Im really baffled and perplexed at this inaction and have felt this way since .... 1980 ! Well ? I put it down to most RC companies are located in warmer climates and for these folks, they never grew up with snowmobiles like so many in colder climates and so snowmobiles are just a "fringe" sport ?!

I dont know if me starting this thread on the TRAXXAS forum will convince or have any bearing on what the corporate decision makers at TRAXXAS do but it sure cant hurt and I feel so strongly about it that the RC Snowmobile concept warrants a HIGH VOLUME production, perhaps as high or higher than, say, their new Funny Car and for this reason the project deserves a HIGH PROFILE COMPANY like TRAXXAS to give an RC Snowmobile it's "Rightful Place" in history !

    [/QUOTE

DEAR TRAXXAS ! These folks ARE SNOWMOBILERS and this is a very fine example of what its all about ! I dont even want to guess how much $$$ is in this one picture but You know what ? It is not about the money, snowmobilers are one of the most passionate group of people on the planet, always were and always will be !

If TRAXXAS or any RC company put an RC Snowmobile into production, it would be more possible for guys like this to possibly build or have aftermarket companies make a VINTAGE sled also. The key is the track, drivers and track suspension systems. Once there is a "part number" for these essential parts the sky is the limit !

Looking at these pictures it just blows me away ! This takes me right back to my childhood and scrounging for a couple bucks to buy a Race n Rally snowmobile magazine !!! My Fav is that RUPP Nitro in the center, I guess because Sammy Sessions raced that sled, was a car racer, including Indianapolis but sadly was killed on the first IFS Ski-doo oval race sled in 1977. Nice Collection !!! Wow ! And Yes, because of this I will finish my little RUPP rc sleds and we will work something out !

Thanks so much for sharing these pics !

Nice idea Jordan and here is an old thread talking about the snowmobiles :
    http://traxxas.com/forums/showthread...e&daysprune=-1

    But take a look posts # 2, 16, 17....

But never knows... Maybe Traxxas accept the challenge and make something like a "special edition" or something like that....

BTW: Awesome job with the snowmobiles....Looks very easy to drive it. ...

Thanks DBG for posting the older thread ! I had no idea an RC Snowmobile thread had been started ! I am totally convinced that there is a market for a "High End" RC Snowmobile and usually the people that agree have a clear understanding of snowmobiles, or ARE snowmobilers themselves !

Lets be HONEST ! Check out MAXX ADAM in the above picture !!! Is the guy AWESOME or what flying through the air ?!!! You can see where he took off from too ! Wicked !!! Already he and his buddies would buy a couple if the model did what he is doing and THAT is my "vision" for an RC Snowmobile ! Nice Ski-Doo and I love the skis and graphics !

I sense from reading the older posts that some people think a "seasonal model" like an RC Snowmobile would not be viable but this is where MARKETING with demographics and a clear understanding of the sport on a GLOBAL basis comes into play !

I bet if there was a marketing study done with just full size snowmobile dealers, almost EVERY snowmobile dealership WORLD WIDE would purchase a couple RTR RC Snowmobiles just for themselves, nevermind their customer demand once the customer saw what was sitting on the counter !

It comes down to educating the people and kicking the doors open ! I can imagine all the cool slogans already !

MAXX ADAM !!! Awesome Picture !!! Looks like a nice day out on the snow !

THANKS MAN ! ... You Just Made My Day !

You already have the perfect set-up for an RC Snowmoible too ! The snow, the ramp and the know-How to get BIG AIR !

Just finished watching the Winter X Games, Tucker Hibbert won his 6th Gold medal in SnoCross with Ross Martin 2nd on a Polaris and Tim Trembley on a Ski-doo 3rd
Hibbert leads the ISOC Race series ! Presnted by TRAXXAS !

I made a double post so had to fill in the blank..... Ooops !

Hope you guys are checking Jordan's website! His is stuff is SUPER COOL! Although he needs to get some more detailed pics and betters videos of his stuff! LOL! His craftsmanship and creative are skills pretty amazing! I can attest to this as I've seem his models in person they are truely very very cool! Now we just need to strap a a GoPro camera on one of them and get some cool footage, but I guess that will have to wait till next year

Traxxas is a sponsor for snowmobiles, thats gotta mean something its not like other companies that make food or human consumables or insurace to sponsor power sports thats just advertising for them but when a company like traxxas sponors a snowmobile maybe they are interested in making one, there are RC snowmobiles on the market they are just kids toys.

A hobby grade rc sled would be absolutely incredible.
I may actually consider selling my other nitro cars and trucks to get one.
Maxx adam I had forgotten about that. Most of the other sports traxxas sponsors is also a vehicle that they produce.
Except of course for motocross. they don't make dirtbikes.

Hey RattleSnaker ! Hi Ron ! Ron is an RC Car racer from way back and has the biggest RC car collection I have seen ! We raced our REVO Monster Trucks together a few years ago and then they cancelled the class up here in Canada ! Im pretty sure he would buy an RC Snowmobile !

Im sure TRAXXAS could make a pretty sweet dirt bike, this company is pretty darn innovative ! My buddy Ron would buy one of those too .... but someone has to make the WORLDS FIRST Hobby Grade RC Snowmobile FIRST !

Your EXACTLY RIGHT Upbasher ! TRAXXAS has a "GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY" here in my opinion and I would give the company anything I could contribute to an RC Snowmobile project just to see it happen !

Ask ANY Professional SnoCross Racer on the AMSOIL CHAMPIONSHIP SNOCROSS Race Series, Presented By TRAXXAS, if they themselves would buy an RC Snowmobile ?

My guess is, everyone on these high profile race teams would be the first ones to buy one ! They would have so much fun amongst themselves getting carried away with it all !

RC SnoCross Racing ! Miniature tuff blocks, banners and flags, and easy to build scaled-down snocross tracks at each AMSOIL CHAMPIONSHIP SNOCROSS Race ! Presented BY TRAXXAS ! Imagine That !?

That would be so insanely awesome!!!!!!!!
It might even become more popular than, say, shortcourse even.
