I guess ideally the balls should be as far inboard as they can to pervent the outboard tip of the control arm from hitting the carrier at the extreme ends of travel then, back one out just enough to get camber setting correct (or maybe even sacrifice some to keep carriers inboard and hold the sandwich togeather) A bent shaft could shorten it (?) and/or cause vibration that causes it to pop out
