    23 tooth pinion and 3cell LiPo=WOW

So got home from work. Decided to install the speed pinion (23 tooth) and grabbed the 3 cell lipo. Wow she flies, way faster than I expected. Question, can I drive with a 3 cell lipo and the 23 tooth pinion? After about 7 minutes and a ton of high speed passes, checked temps and motor was at 161 degrees F, and esc was at 132 degrees F. Temperature outside was about 48 degrees. Are those temps normal? Also I have a cut out in the windshield to allow airflow into the body over the motor.

Thats on my to do list. cooling fan would be a good idea. I am assuming mine is going to be even FASTER for a minute or 2 with NIMH batteries, going to be 14.4 volts.....

Those temps are nothing to worry about in my book.
Whatever it is I just said... I could be wrong.

Nope. There is a rev limiter on the VXL ESC, and NiMh drop much more voltage than LiPo. You can expect about 50mph tops from either, and you will have to take breaks frequently with either to avoid overheating.

That's about the max I would run. At that temp motor temp was probably over 170 under power. I have seen motors fry that read 185!

So when you guys are doing speed runs how much time does everyone run their erevo's for? before unplugging battery and letting cool down?

Depends on many factors. Mainly gearing and outside temperature what size wheels but do a few runs and then check the motor and esc temp.
If multiple speed runs are important I would buy a mamba max pro because the stock esc is the weak point

How fast does 3 cell get you? Faster then dual nimh?

When I bought my Merv, I picked up a couple 2s lipos. Once in awhile I'll run them in series (4s) and its absolutly retarded to control. In paralelle thing works great and run time is excellent.

In theory, no... but reality is always different.
NiMh are heavier, probably close to double the weight.
NiMh cannot provide anywhere near the amperage LiPo can.
NiMh dip in voltage a lot more than LiPo.

Due to these factors I think 3S LiPo is faster.
The only way to really tell is to take two NiMh in series and run it to check speed and then 3S and run it to check speed.
Whatever it is I just said... I could be wrong.

And I am 100% certain that 3s lipo is not faster, because whenever I got my 1/16 everyone told me they were, and so I did extensive research on it, and tested it IRL.

Dual NiMh cells will reach the upper limit of the vxl-3m, there is no way to go faster than 50krpm without upgrading the ESC. Again, confirmed by Traxxas engineers, Crusey, and myself.

So if I switched to stock gearing 28th pinion I believe. Would I be faster running 28th than running 23 tooth? Or is 23 the fastest using the stock Spur?

Also if I switch the ESC to a Mamba Max Pro as 50 recommended would the esc and stock brushless motor run cooler? Or just the ESC? Or do I have to swap the ESC and Motor to the Mamba motor?

Bigger pinion or smaller spur = more speed and more heat

Smaller pinion or bigger spur = less speed and less heat

The MMP works good with the stock motor, the trouble a lot with the esc but the motor is great overall. Like this with just the MMP ESC is not too heavy than if you got the 1/10 motor and not have to run parallel lipos.

25t with series connector? That thing will fly but a fan will only help. Wont solve your heating problems

Being in the middle of winter you might be ok. If you don't have a temp gun buy one and keep an eye on the temps

23 tooth without a fan, yes. But they also suggest short monitored runs on smooth surfaces.
