Talking Ken Block Rally VXL Build Thread

I recently bought myself a christmas present of a new Ken Block Rally VXL and it arrived a few days ago

Along with this I ordered in some extras such as:
    - Camaro Body
    - HPI X-Pattern Radial Tires 26mm
    - HPI TE37 Wheels
    - 2x 2s 2200mah LiPo
    - Series Connector

    Future Mods:
    - Dyed Black Chassis
    - Off Road Wheels
    - Drift Wheels
    - LED Lighting
    - MAYBE Big Block Conversion

I am still waiting on the LiPos and Wheels to arrive but out of the box I am very happy.

    Camaro Body

I bought a Pro-Line Camaro body for a bashing body, but I am not sure if I still want to keep it as a bashing body..

I decided to go with a Matt Black look, but after everything was painted, I forgot that the paint was on the inside and the shiny lexan turned it into a glossy black. However I am still happy with the result.

Paints I used are Tamiya TS-6 Matt Black and Tamiya TS-71 Smoke for window tinting

Decals applied and lowered rear body mount to suit the height.

I like it too, but its a bit to low and scraps on a lot and I dont want to raise it either because it will take away its nice 'stance'
    But cheers.

I tore down my KB Rally to dye the chassis and rockers black.

The dye I used was RIT Dye Black but in liquid form.

I tied the rockers onto fishing line which was tied to a tool so I could easily put them in and take them back out

I boiled the water and poured a quarter of the bottle into the pot and dunked the parts in.

I pulled the parts out after about 5 minutes and noticed some of the plastic shoed first signs of melting from the water and that the dye was a purply black colour.

To make the plastic black, I sprayed over the chassis with some left over smoke paint from the Camaro body, which then turned the chassis black.

Everything has been put back together and looks more aggressive now that it is black.

    After:

    Some new parts arrived today
I thought they would be the rest of the parts I ordered but it turns out only one package was for my rally.

HPI TE37 Wheels and 1Watt LEDs for my E-Revo (Maybe)

    Wheels with HPI X-Pattern tires

    Body Reinforcement

After some use with my new LiPos, 2s 45c 2200mAh, I noticed that there has been some wheel rubbing on the body which has removed the paint.

To fix this problem I got some duct tape and put it inside the body, mostly around the areas that are prone to wear and tear such as the front and rear, wheel wells, roof and body mounts, but I got carried away and eventually covered most of the body.

I then went over the excess tape hanging from the body with a knife to neaten it up.

And a photo of my dusty car

I know that there may be better and stronger ways to do this, but this is what I have come up with using materials I have around my house.

Should I install a LED light kit in the stock KB body or the Camaro body?

Very nice build. Looks great. I too have a rally being built, both those sets of wheels/tires and that body, so nice to see how they look together.. Awesome.

Hey I like your camaro body a lot! Looks much cleaner than mine, that was the first body I've ever painted / cut. Figured this would be a good place to post some pictures of my ken block rally...

mods: integy piggyback shocks with different springs front and back, cant remember which exactly
RPM hubs to eliminate wheel slop which there was way too much of originally
Traxxas anodized aluminum push rods and soon to be toe links as well
    2200mah LiPos
RPM upper and lower, front and back suspension arms
trimmed front bumper for larger wheels / rubbing
trimmed body posts to allow adjustment depending on camaro / ken block body
HPI x pattern tires, hpi drift tires, stock ken block drift tires, traxxas drift tires, tamitya rally block tires
Custom duct tape work on my beat ken block body

beat up body set up for off road driving

other body + spare wheels and all

And I can't believe that they don't offer them in green like the arms for the Revo.
I actually emailed them asking about it...and was told that it would cost too much to make them in green.
Didn't make much sense to me since they already have the mold and the color...but oh well.
