18v Dewalt, w/ MME m, 6s

Howdy Summit brothers and sisters!

My 18v Dewalt drill motor died the other day. I crushed the handle by dropping it 20 ft.

I've removed, and cleaned the motor and soldered some thick wire to the motor tabs. I plan on using 6.5 bullet connectors and hooking the 18v Dewalt to my spare Mamba Monster Extreme ESC. (It has the castle cap pack on it). I plan on running the motor ESC combo on two 3s 45c 4500 mah lipos.

I have a motor plate from kershaw designs that should work for the motor.

There will be picture s to come. I intrested on peoples thoughts about he 18v Dewalt. I could nt find any threads using the google to show people using an 18v Dewalt with a mamba ESC.

The 18 v is the lowest kv of the dewalts(1800 kv or so iirc
And will benifit from 6s.on 4s it would've under volted and be somewhat underwhelming.should have lots of torque

A DeWalt drill died? With an eager summit owner and a "spare" MMM laying around? How convenient! Personally I suspect foul play, sacrificial murder for the sake of your sumit.

But on 6s that thing should be a torque monster. Speeds still wont be crazy but it should have enough torque and power to gear it up. Please keep us posted

It looks like its just a Mamba Monster ESC with a bank of capacitors. As far as I know a Mamba Monster CANT run a brushed motor. Someone please correct me if Im wrong.

You might be able to get it to work, but you might burn out motors quickly.

Do you have a Field link to put it in brushed mode?

Maybe it's a good idea to get replacement brushes if that 18v dewalt allows
Looking at wot from the vid seems like it'll wear faster than usual

Thanks for information mr jimmy! Those are the directions I followed.

I wanted reverse as an option, so I ignored the forward only extreme mode wiring. Wiring straight to the battery, seems crazy.

Im definitely ordering more brushes! Holly cow, the sparks. Tomorrow, I will remove the stock pinion and mount the motor on the truck.

When I put new brushes on my 14.4 just a while ago(same brushes).i did a 15 minute break in on my Icharger (dry).cleaned and lubed.
First run it ate battery life(pre 8200s)
Fair bit of sparks.another 15 minute break in (dry) much better no sparks good contact.runtime improved thats on 4s
6s must be like fire works.lol

Just watched your motor test. I like the flame thrower you added to the motor. I once ran my Stampede with the Titan on a 3s. Ran like a bat outta heck and had the same sparks. Only did it once so I am curious to see how long the motor lasts.

I installed the motor today. Needless to say I'm not happy with the install, i apparently threw away my stock motor mount, so i decided to use an old Kershaw Design motor mount from my previous dual 700HO install. It took a lot of cutting to get the motor to even mount, and they way i cut the motor mount only allows me to use an 18 tooth pinion and 65t spur. I have no articulation on the motor so i can't change spur, or pinion size. I will be ordering a new mount from Kershaw Designs, so i can experiment with the best type of spur/pinion options.

Pros/Cons ATM

Positives:
1) Torque, Torque, Torque. I couldn't stop the wheels once locked from turning with my hands.
2) The motor doesn't tick, chug, glitch. No matter how slow you go. It's very responsive. Would be great for trail runs, and hill climbs.
3) Loves 6s.

Cons/Fear:
1) It's slow, maybe too slow, and the added Torque is wasted compared to the Torque that it's higher KV brothers can put out.
2) I think i Liked my Traxxas Big Block motor better!

i was able to run a 24t pinion on a 12volt dewalt before it burned up. im pretty sure you can go to a 20 or 22t for safe speed,

I need some help Traxxas community. Ignoring of sanity, what is the HIGHEST gearing one can do with 32p gears.

The highest I've found is a 34t pinion and 50t spur. To be honest... i want more. (AGAIN, ignoring sanity).

This is not about how fast i want to go, it's about what an 18v dewalt can do I'm going to do more testing with my 25/50 set up, to be certain it's happy performing with that gearing.

Then i want to go as far as i can go. Using the google, i couldn't find anyone that had used the 18v dewalt motor, and i figured i couldn't be the ONLY one on the internet that wanting to know what it could do with 6s power.

I just want to make sure if I'm going to the extreme, I'm going the most extreme i can go.

Here is a gear calculating website (you may have been there) but it allows you to theorize the outcomes of specific gears. It even has sliders which would show you when your motor has reached its max.

Small update, I found a website that sells custom gears.

They have mod .8, 5mm bore pinions from, 12T all the way to 120T!!!

Amazing! I ordered a 35 T, 40T and 52T! In stainless steel!

Soooo excited.

Update!!! My gears are in!

36T, 40T, 48T, 56T all in stainless steal!!!

The smallest pinion in the photo is a 25t traxxas pinion.

Ok now which gears are actually gonna fit?

I imagine that 56t would fit with a 20t spur. Now you have to find custom small spurs. I think the 3.3 revo had a 36t spur as an option.

Well I'm using the kershaw designs motor plate, but right the 40t and lower fits on my 52t spur.

Im going to take the motor plate of and cut the motor slot arc longer. I'm confident ill be able to.run 56T pinion with a 50t spur.

some peeps here are good with math. guys,....what kind of speed can be expected with this set up? assume a 5.5" tire, right? anything taller would prob not be stable enough to get up to speed.

IIRC 18v is 1125kv, 14.4v is 1325kv, and 12v is 1525kv. I have tried them all and finally went bl. 18v on 6s is only 4-5k faster rpms than a 4s 14.4. Yes there is more torque to gear higher but it's not enough for the speeds you sound like you want to achieve. It also isn't the same "seat of your pants" feeling as more rpms are. Honestly IMHO your best option for speed is a BL motor. You can get a 2000+ kV bl motor for $50+ and there's no nodding necessary. You On GPS my summit will run 40 mph on 4s with a tekin rx8 2000kV motor with big joes by running stock spur and a 20tooth pinion. That is the largest you can fit without modding the motor plate and/or heatsink mounting or changing the spur.

Howdy everyone, the project isnt over, but its changed.

I burnt up the 18v with the 50t pinion... i had it geared, 50t pinion/58 spur.

I did a couple of runs up and down my block, it was fast but obviously not as fast as a brushless system.

The motor lasted about 20mins and smoked.

Now im running dual 14.4 dewalts, and installed the kershaw designs aluminum chassis. Im going for pulling power. Im building a cart to pull.
