Two different platforms. Do you want 2wd or 4x4? Slayer is based on the Revo platform and the Slash more or less on the Rustler.

By looking at the two trucks and the price for each, you get a lot more truck for a lower price with the slayer.
I would get the Slayer, I got mine for $430 new on ebay. It's the better way to go IMO. The Slayer also has better parts like shocks and the nice tuned pipe, The Nitro Shalsh has a cheap pipe on it. The 4wd is veary nice too, The Slayer is well worth it. I would skip the 2wd Nitro Slash.
Slash 4x4,
Im not quite sure what to make of the slash's new nitro platform. It has a metal single gear transmission, which many have asked for, for quite some time. But that seems to be the end of the different goodies. The aftermarket could define this vehicle. As far as the slayer, which I have actually driven, and own, I like a lot. It does take a few extra's to help stabilize it, but its a blast to drive
I'm crazy, no really I am.
Not to mention the 2wd trucks spin out quite easy on dirt and stuff, As seen in the Nitro Slash vid. I really think the Nitro Slash was a waist of time and $, But that's just me. But the choice is yours.
Slash 4x4,
Addendum to what I said earlier: you can make a Slayer into 2wd by removing the front center driveshaft.

Thanks
Probally go with the slayer now
I'd go Slayer, I love mine. Slayer is better out of the box, better shocks, diffs, etc. But, don't count the nitro Slash out, with some upgrades it could be good...
EDIT: D'oh!
Thanks
Probally go with the slayer now
DeWalt 1/8 Summit, Slash XL-5, Slayer Pro 3.3.
Slayer. The 4wd is super forgiving and much easier to control. Best truck I've owned so far!
