I have a charger that can charge lipos but it can only charge up to 5amps. i was wondering if i have a lipo that is 8000mah for example can i still charge it at 5amp or do i have to charge at recommended 1c=8amps for a 8000mah batt.

You can charge at 5 it will just take longer. Remember tobalance also.
