ESC Confusion

I'm installing a new 3xl brushless in my sons revo. This is a manufacturer replacement. I plug in the battery with the radio on press the button and I get a fast blinking red which if you look in the manual says it is in protection mode. If I turn the radio off the ESC glows solid green.

I've got no servo or speed control

I'm stumped

What batteries are you using?

If you are using NiMh with the ESC is in LiPo mode, you will get the over-voltage warning.

I've tried both Nimh and Lipo,

I can get the esc to stop blinking and go to a dim red if I make sure the radio is trimmed out. I'm using a 27Mhz radio, I wonder if there is something in the setting that has to do with the radio?
