First blown motor and ESC. Pictures and questions....

Stock VXL ESC and V3500 - Slash Ultimate was running great. Had the slipper in, was geared 21/54, running Traxxas 2S and 3S LiPo’s – no issues, running fast and fun for months. Went to track and made these changes: replaced slipper with center diff, geared down to 11/54 and installed new Losi green springs in front. Made 3 or 4 runs on the track with the 2S, was ok, did not have the punch I needed. Changed to the 3S, made 2 runs, much faster and punchy. On the 3rd run, not doing much, a quick punch of the gas to jump and I heard a pop. Lost everything - dead. Grabbed Slash, burning smell, small amount of smoke. Seemed like the ESC, but then broke it down and found the motor and the ESC were both toast. The ESC is all burnt and one of the wires came out of the ESC. And the motor, well...

Can anyone shed some light on why this happened?
Not a hot day, not pushing it real hard or anything.
The copper wires in the motor are kinda messed up, is there any fixing a motor like this or is it junk?
Does anyone think Traxxas will help me out with this?
Is it even worth it to try with Traxxas?
Please let me know that I am not the only one that this happened to!

    This thing stinks!

    Stinks real bad!

I take it the magnet is not supposed to look like this?

    The other side.

Some of the copper wires are out of place and messed up a little.

Can I replace the magnet and be back up and running?

I think when it locked, it chewed up my spur gear a little.

You were way overgeared, thats why it happened

Even with stock 13/54 gearing you will have heat issues with the stock electronics

Upgrade your motor / esc if you want to run that fast

When this happend, I was geared 11/54. Am I confused about the gearing? I thought 11 pinion was a low gear.

Just blew my motor / esc last week. Got too hot and melted the epoxy off the magnets. Same scenario. Had to PAY for new motor / esc but at a reduced rate. I believe it cost 130.00 for both. If it happens again, I'm going with the mamba package.

Im really not trying to be a jerk .. Just hoping to save you some money next time.. $130 is too much for a "reduced rate" replacement of a stock system when other ESC/motor combos will suit your needs beter.

These are all over Flea Bay for $115 plus $15 shipping (approx) and have been proven to be better than the stock systems for power and speed. Plus Castle offers a 1 year warranty and then just $40 flat rate ESC repair/replacement after that..

You want the MMP because it will be better in the long run. I recommend the 3800kv for 2s lipos and the 2400kv for 3s and 4s lipos. I have the 2400 in my slash ultimate, geard 25/50, 4s lipo the thing does over 70.

that combo is the 3800.. I know the SV2 is not as good as the MMP but still better than stock IMO

Dont bother with the silly Sidewinder, its use is marginal in a heavy SC truck

Much better options around for similar money

Try www.funshobby.com for a combo with a Tenshock SC401 motor

I love the Slash 4x4! The weak point in the truck is the motor and esc. That why in the two I own they both have Castle 2400 motors in them. The VXL is a good little motor, I just push it harder than it can go
