Giving the old Slash some love

So I bought this Slash used off the forum many years ago... probably 3 or 4 years. I made a couple updates to it like an FLM transmission and some AKA adapters but that was about it.

Here is a pic after I broke off a wheelie bar axle on the old Swami Bar.

Rear undercarriage showing the Swami Bar in place.

Front undercarriage with the stock bumper and RPM front skid plate. For those who don't know, the RPM skid plate improves on the steering bellcrank mount by capturing the screw head a little tighter to prevent them popping out, a common problem with the stock design.

Somewhere along the way I added STRC C-blocks and some AKA 17mm adapters, and moved the shock mount out to improve stability.

Whenever I do a build or repair/replacement, I use SS screws to replace the black carbon steel ones.

Here's a pic from a few feet back. You can see the 3s lipo with the battery expansion kit, velineon esc/motor.

These are some of my favorite pics of the truck. Sure it has the stock lid and napkins in the background, but I like it.

Now it looks like its floating in air.

BTW i'm going to order a new front skid for my Sl2sh. I've been needing to get rid of the stocker, I upgraded to the 4wd steering saver setup. I'm going to go with the Proline front skid. Thanks for the advice on that fix.

Just for fun here's a pic of the 17mm Slash next to my Slash STRC lcg race truck with stock size tires and stock 12mm axles.

So I decided to upgrade it a little by installing some new shocks and a roll bar.

Gearing setup: 83/23 nothing special here.

I went with Losi Ten T front shocks, and Ofna LXE front buggy shocks on the rear.

GPS after my latest speed runs with a top speed of 53mph. I know the GPS is accurate because I've used it in my car but the Slash just doesn't look like it's going 53mph when it's zooming by...

    And another misc pic:

Wow those big 1/8 scale wheels look great on that truck... I was hoping my modding days were cooled off for a while but they look like too much fun, I might have to try em out. Those shocks are ridiculously huge! Love that truck man, perfect example of what a basher slash is all about.

Thanks I appreciate it. This truck has been rock solid for a year or two so it deserved some updates.

I originally went to 1/8 wheels for the looks but found there is a ton of cheap wheels out there in the 17mm axle size. Anything from buggy up to 1/5th.

Did you have to modify the body to get the clearance for those wheels?

This truck has a roll cage on it now, but a stock traxxas body fits on it perfect with a bit of rubbing at full flex under the fenders. I have them duct taped to stop the paint from rubbing off. I'll post some pics of the old look when I get home.

Here are a few pics of the body taped with duct tape where the tires and body posts rub.

You can see a bit of the tape from above.

I don't see many replies to this. Your truck looks real good, the wheels and transmission really stand out.

I like the look of those huge shocks. I also have duct tape on my body probably close to a pound of it though. I also put the tape wherever I thought the roll cage would come into contact with the body. Want as few holes in paint as possible.

I'm surprised how long the duct tape lasts. That stuff sticks forever.

These AKA 17mm adapters, and the STRC C-blocks have been on the truck forever. They have really held up.

Nice look'n fleet you got there!

I see what you did to mark your shock springs. How are the Losi Ten-T's holding up for you? What weight oil did you go with? Stock 30wt?

Thanks, I've been working on the 'fleet' for a while, tweaking things till I got 'em how I like it.

I use 30w rear and 35w front... at least I think it's 35w. I mixed 50/50 30w and 40w because I didn't have 35 wt on hand and it handles pretty good. And those springs came marked like that and they were brand new, I'm not sure who did it but it makes sense.

Do you recommend mounting 1/8 buggy or stadium tires/wheels, or is there a difference? I'm thinking I am ready to get me some adapters but can't quite decide on the right wheels and tires for my 2WD slash. You were right, 1/8 wheels/tires are a lot cheaper than SC! I will probably make back the extra money I spent on the adapters in cheaper tires! Now deciding on compounds... street, all terrain? Hmm...

Yea you can get a nice set of 4 big blocks delivered for about $25. I really like the look of buggy tires on my trucks, especially the Slash and Rustler. For size comparison, check out my pic below of the truggy, 1/8 buggy, Stadium truck (Rustler), Slash.
