    GT-8 conversion build

Ive recieved most of my parts, so I decided to start a build thread since I havent seen many of them when it comes to a gt or rally car conversion. I have a few pics of the build so far. Im using the power system out of a savage xs so its completely waterproof. The shocks are hpi w duratrax springs, but I made them progressive in the rear. I really want to stay as light as possible, so I will be using 2s 4000mah batteries and also have titanium links. I have strc and rpm parts, and ceramic bearings. The only traxxas parts left are the servo and transmission, which I may go aluminum with later. Its shown w blitz wheels, but Im getting rid of those and prolly going with 17mm gt tires or j-concepts g-locs.

Next thing is going to be body work, then tires. I have a Protoform 1/8 PF8-GT body on its way.

I didn't know that conversion would work with a 2x4. I can't wait to see the final result.

What's going on with the rear shock springs? Are there two on each shock?

I took off the rear and front bumper, and now using a rpm wide front bumper so I can mount body post off it (also removed the front body post). So now I have all brand new rpm front bumper w the kc lights and a rear rpm bumper with mudflaps, and some new wheels/tires Im not using. I only had to lower the rear body post. I got the body in, and it is huge!

I ordered a front set of black chrome allstar/anaconda set. I want to see if they will work on the back before I order the other set. I also ordered some white pearl and gunmetal grey for the colors. Really all thats left is paint, body posts up front, wheels/tires, and trimming the body to fit the wheel wells over the tires good.

To answer your question, O.G., I made up a progressive spring setup. Softer, smaller spring up top for the little bumps, and a stiffer, longer spring on bottom for harder bumps, w 50wt oil. Kinda like the proline powerstrokes. Ill have to wait till its running to see what adjustments Ill have to make.

You can use a pair of front duratrax evader bx soft springs, and 2 pair of the hard springs. Cut the soft springs in half so you have 4 smaller, softer springs. Youll also need some more of those black rings that hold the spring so you can put them on both springs where they meet in the middle. That would be good for a progressive, offroad set up. Mine are stiffer for on road. The green springs are the hard duratrax bx front springs. I forgot what the blue springs are, but I can find out when I get home if you like. Of course, you could always buy a set of progressive springs that are stiffer in bottom section and softer up top (all in one spring), but I just like tinkering.

Got the front body mount done. Used 60mm aluminum post screwed into the wide front bumper. Lowered the rear stock post as low as I could, looks like it will work. Just waiting for paint, wheels, and lights to arrive.

I think they are on the savage xs ss kit. They may be used as upgrades for the blitz sc truck. I ordered some jato shocks to try out also. I also have a light kit that just came in, but im still waiting for the paint and wheels to arrive. I have the body taped up n ready. We just had a hurricane pass by us which has slowed everyone down around here.

I liked the thicker jato shocks, so I ordered some xo-1 aluminum gtr shocks to use. Ill get the body painted tonight, and I also got a set of front offset black chrome allstar wheels w anaconda tires premounted. I found that the front offsets all around work well. That way I can rotate tires as needed. So I ordered another set. Im still waiting on my batteries, which were one of the first things I ordered!

I still havent decided where to mount the 4 blue lights. I could do an underglow setup, or have them in the front grill. Any opinions???

i think the underglow would probably look better than in the grill if you ask me. if it were a 1:1 car with an actual grill and everything i would say there instead.

My son and I have been watching this post closely. We built one of these and are in the process of building two others with the same body. We like your paint job and you will like the outcome of this build for sure. We are having a lot of fun with this. We have one with a slash and the other with a LCG backslash.

Well, ive heard the power system in the savage xs sucks, and now I can confirm this. I hooked a 2s battery up and the esc went up in smoke, I think because of the motor shorting out. On start up, the beeping was very quiet, not like usual. Then the wires got hot, and before I could disconnect, esc smoked. Anyway, I ordered the sv2 and 3800kv from castle. Thats what I get for going cheap thru ebay. Direct castle products have never let me down. I thing some of the castle based products, like low end hpi, have inferior components. At least now ill have a warranty. I hope to finally have my maiden run middle of next week.

On such a low profile 2.8" tire, the ballooning is pretty minimal. Not nearly as much as say a trencher. Those things balloon like crazy!

Thats a 5700kv @ 9.9v, ill be using a 3800kv @ 7.4v w similar gearing. Its gonna balloon some, but thats nothing compared to some all terrains like trenchers or mashers. I can handle that ballooning, adds some speed.

Start this video at about 1 min in, this kind of ballooning will make you lose control.

Yea, that tire had the entire truck vibrating and wobbling. I imagine the balance of the tire really comes into play too. Ill just have to wait and see how bad its gonna be. BTW, I was born in Lima, and have tons of family up that way!
