The ultimate gearing question...I run only 6s and I have played around with gearing. My experience, 20/54, 20/56, 18/65, 18/62 & 17/62 are all good for 6s depending on the tyres you use. They play a big part in motor temps. Try these gears and see what works for you, a temp gun is kind of a must have.....

Hot motor + cool esc = under geared.
Cool motor + hot esc = over geared
    Everything warm just right..

Motor ~ 180/190*F (82/88*C) maximum, ideally 140/160*F (60/71*C), temps can be 10*F higher inside the motor
ESC ~ pretty much same temps / Fan comes on @ 150*F (65*C)
    Lipo's ~ 140*F (60*C) max, ideally 100/120*F (38/49*C).........

I run a 20/54 set up and I found it to be the best of both worlds. Plenty of torque and extremely fast on top end. My only problem is shredding tires off the rims. I guess I have to set up my puch control. Right now I'm at 0%. Might set it up at 30% and see if that will save my tires. I'm on my third set in three weeks

Tape your tyres...I run 6s with no tyre issues, they never balloon and make handling awesome, throttle control is as important.

I found that my punch set at 50% on 20/54 for bashing pretty good. That gearing chart is only a guide...you need to play around with gearing to see what works for you. Again, it also depends on the tyres you running.

What exactly do you mean by taping the tyres?

Here you go bro...Check post #30

Its a very informative post...if you running 6s I would not recommend the 120 diff lube. I've just tried it and shredded diffs...I think for 4s and the right gearing it would be awesome.

Yeah, taping tires works well. However, I have purchased tires and rims already pre-assembled. Next set I will do that

You could bake them bro...its pretty easy to do. This is my method I use for baking:

    1. I preheated the oven to just over 200°C (Roughly 400°F)
    2. Wrapped each tyre in tinfoil twice to contain the smell of the rubber heating up in the oven.
    3. I put the tyres in the oven for just over 5min and then turned off. I left them in there for a further 30min or so.
    4. I removed 1 tyre at a time, took foil off and with the oven mits removed the tyre off the rim. I couldn't believe how easy they came off the rims. You will get a strong smell of heated rubber once you open the foil so I suggest you open up outside , in the garage or if the house is well ventilated.
    5. I then cleaned the excess glue off the tyre with acetone. The glue came off fairly easy and tyre looked in good shape still.

I will recommend the baking method over the boiling method...as in the past the boiling method discoulered my rim and slightly warped it from been boiled. I also found with boiling method that the foam sucked up a lot of water and retained the heat for longer which made it awkward to work with.

I have seen on these forums some guys using GOOF...I think it is goo off. They seem to say it works pretty well but I cant comment as I have never used it.

    20/54 is a good start for gearing (both 4s & 6s)..

tires ~ sell the set you have now & get what you can for them, & buy new unmounted combo.
When you bake it does work, but weak'ns the tire (sideway).....just not worth the hasle, jmho
Would you go flip my truck back over??

The baking method above works THE best over every other way. I didn't even get complaints from the pregnant wife that can smell everything.

I understood you ...I have noticed the side wall become a bit brittle. My tyres still holding up aftaer a coulpe of months...my suggestion only try it once per set as a 2nd time might completely destroy the tyre.

Where do you guys get your pinions from? I always get a Traxxas spur, but I dont think they make a 20t pinion.

Traxxas does make 20T. Bought it from local hobby shop. Brand new in Traxxas package. Just ordered a complete 8 pack set off ebay made by Robinson Racing so I can change any time

Speaking of temps, where do you guys measure the ESC temp? I get different readings depending on where I point the temp gun.

Just got a temp gun to make sure everything is ok. Made some repeated high speed runs on full throttle and saw a max of just under 70 degrees celsius, so all good there, but want to double check ESC temps.
