That's because the TQi already has a built-in fail safe and it does not play well with an external one.

I haven't done research on the TQi since I don't have one but I know that my Duratrax fail-safe would not work with my Traxxas 2.4 Link radio and this was the reason. I would venture to say Traxxas maintained this feature in their next generation of radio(s). It also should say in your truck manual or even the TQi manual.
One way to check is to turn the electronics on but the engine off and pull to full throttle then turn off the tx. If the throttle goes back to neutral then you should be good.

    Edit: found it all...

Your model has electronic fail-safes to prevent this type of malfunction, but the first, best defense against a runaway model is to always turn the transmitter on first, and off last.

The TQi transmitter and receiver are equipped with an automatic fail-safe system that does not require user programming. In the event of signal loss or interference, the throttle will return to neutral and the steering will hold its last commanded position. If Fail-Safe activates while you are operating your model, determine the reason for signal loss and resolve the problem before operating your model again.
