I bought a spare Exocage to make Green to match my truck. (Will post pics in another thread sometime when I get to it)

Here is the basics of what I did:

    Items you will need:
    • 180-200 grit sandpaper (I used 200)
    • 280-320 grit sandpaper (Optional, but I wanted a really smooth finish)
    • Black Primer (grey works as well, but I went with black because I had some laying around)
    • Paint in color/finish of choice (I used Krylon fusion_for_plastic - Hunter Green)

The revolutionary no-prep, superbond Fusion for Plastic® now makes painting plastic possible.

No sanding or priming required (I still did the sanding and priming because I am just old-school I guess)
Bonds easily to most plastics, PVC, resin and more
Fast dry; fully chip resistant after 7 days
Features EZ Touch 360® Dial Spray Tip

    DRY TO TOUCH
    15 minutes

    DRY TO HANDLE
    1 hour

    FOR USE WITH
Wood, Metal, Wicker, Wrought Iron, Plastic, Hard Vinyl, Glass, Plaster, Ceramic, Paper, Paper Mache.
    Here are the steps:
    1. Removed parts from packaging (or remove from truck and disassemble)
    2. Gently sand all surfaces with the 180-200 grit sandpaper so that the surface is roughed up. This is done to give the paint just a bit more surface to bond too which will allow for a longer lasting finish.
    3. Surfaces that come into contact with other parts of the Exocage or the body of the truck should be masked off (Masking tape is great for this).
    4. Wash and dry the parts (try to use Lint Free cloth to try or let air dry) - DO NOT PAINT if anything is still WET!!
    5. I used hobby wire to suspend the parts so I can spray paint them, but you can hold them or find some other method.
    6. Prep your painting area and apply a full coating of primer and let dry
    7. Gently sand again with the 180-200 grit paper
    8. Wash and dry the parts (try to use Lint Free cloth to try or let air dry) - DO NOT PAINT if anything is still WET!!
    9. Prep the parts and apply the color paint of your choice and let dry.
    10. Remove masking tape
    11. Re-assemble and enjoy!!

    The following steps are optional:

Before I start this part, let me explain, I have one cage for use and another for "show". My bashing cage, I just did the above on, for my "show" cage, I added the following steps:

Sand all of the parts with the 280-320 grit sandpaper.
    Wash and dry the parts
    Apply another coat of color
Sand all of the parts with the 280-320 grit sandpaper.
    Wash and dry the parts
    Remove masking tape
    Re-assemble

    Hope this helps!!!

(Yes, I know it's overkill to a degree, but this is a sure fire way to make sure the paint has less of a chance of peeling and looking bad)

This [mini] one was bought new, immediately professionally bead blasted (removes mold release and "scuffs" surface well for paint adherence, turning is a dark gray) and painted with Krylon Fusion. We took the 7-day curing period seriously, and doubled it, lol.
I know they're having their break there by your brake drums. No, you're not invited.

What would be REALLY killer if someone was able to make a Metal one (Titanium maybe) that is powder coated... Man, that would ROCK! LOL!

nice but . . . (the voice of the pessimistic person) . wouldn't one good roll-over scratch and destroy all that hard work?

Is it possible to bleach plastic to a white (or off white) color then Rit dye it any color you wish?

Why hasn't RPM made a colored (or colorless ) summit rollcage?

I wish they would make a white one to allow more personalization.

Another. Idea which should last longer than paint is plastic dip. Its an adhesive rubber that comes in many colors. It is not indestructible but should last longer than bare paint. I figure if it last a long time on professional hand tools than 2 or 3 coats should do well on the summit cage.

Thinking out side the box since birth.

I'm not sure, but wouldn't a paint that actually bonds with plastic perhaps last a decently long time?

Either way, the goal of the one that was done in yellow was to show the battle scars!
