Got me a truck! Work in progress.........

Finally, I can sell my moped (soon). I now have a '84 Ford Ranger. It has 85k miles and needs some work. It's going to be fun working on it!

Off the top of my head, it needs rear shoes and a fuel pump. There are a few other things but I don't remember ATM. I got it for 0$, need to get a floor jack and some jack stands, but after that should be good to go with about $200 into it. I'm currently getting my associates in automotive (3rd semester right now) so this will be a great learning experience for me.

Man, my E-Revo is worth like 3x this truck lol.

There are mummified caterpillars in the bed........

Notice: Shifter knob gone and so is the ignition. It currently has a push button start lol! No radio also. Junk yard, here I come!

    Needs a fuel pump...

On the subject of the grill. I was messing with the A/C knobs and the whole grill just fell off with me inside haha

All glass is crack free (aside from one headlight). Can't complain, it was free. The truck is 7 years older than I am! lol

2.9 v6? You're lucky it's not a 4 cyl. I'd do some basic prevention on it asap.....compression/leakdown test, look at the color of the plugs, filters, tranny service if it runs good.

I will be for sure. The guy I got it from, is a long time mechanic so he knows what needs to be addressed. Like I said, only 3rd semester into my associates. I probably know enough just to get myself into trouble. He was using it a year or so ago, so its not that far off actually.

He's actually an AC specialist, and he put a rather nice unit in the truck. Should blow ice in the hot summer hehe

He gave this to me as a project. I'll probably learn more from this than I have in my last year and a half.

the carb looks new. so the mechanical fuel pump shouldnt be bad at all to put into it. if it is mechanical and not a fuel injected beast.
the steering column can be replaced with one from a junkyard. just get the key for it. then while you are there you can get the shifter nob. with the button. and any other parts that you need that they have.

its not a bad looking truck. and a nice deal on it too!!!
good luck and keep us posted.

The pump is mechanical, so that won't be bad at all. (carb is new also) I was planning on replacing the column pretty soon, but first, I need it to run. I really want to stop using my moped. Trolling the road at 25mph is no fun haha

Well, my tuck is ready to drive! I'm going to get it inspected an tagged on Monday. It may seem like wayyyy too much for for an old truck, but it was free, and I used it as a learning experience to work on vehicles. Before I started on my truck, I knew little past changing spark plugs. Now, I work on other people's vehicles.

Here's a list of what I've done in the last 9 months:

    Fix:

    De-rust tank
    Remove old gas
    Clean/gap spark plugs
    Clean distributor cap
    Clean distributor rotor
    Horn wiring
    Coolant reservoir cleaned
    EGR cleaned
    Y-pipe leak sealed
    Rotors re-surfaced
    Drums re-surfaced
    Re-time engine
    Remove leaves from air ducts
    Clean air motor
    Sea-foam engine
    Tighten rear-view mirror (flopped)
    Secure side mirrors
    Re-build carburetor

    Replace/Add:

    Tailgate
    Bedliner
    Tow-ball hitch
    Dash panels
    Grill
    Air check valve
    Starter switch
    Valve cover gaskets
    Fuel pump
    Wiper blades
    Fuel filter
    Horn switch
    PCV valve
    PCV valve grommet
    Oil pan gasket x2
    Oil filter
    Oil
    Rear wheel brake cylinders
    Brake pads (front)
    Calipers (front)
    Brake hoses (front)
    Drum hardware (rear)
    E-brake cables (left and right)
    Brake fluid flush
    Coolant flush
    Air cleaner
    Spark plugs
    Spark plug wires
    Ignition coil
    Differential gasket
    Differential fluid
    Tires
    Lugnuts
    Battery wires (ground side)
    Gas cap
    Air flilter
    Air temp sensor
    Oil pump
    Carburetor spacer gasket
    EGR gasket x2
    Oil drain plug gasket
    Gas tank
    Fuel level sensor
    Fuel pump gasket

    Pics:

The tailgate I found came with the bullet hole. (hey, got lucky, its the same color: "Dirty White")

Got creative here. The ignition was frozen, so I put my horn button there, and in place of the cigarette lighter I put the new ignition switch.

Awesome truck man, I like projects like this. A lot of character and very tough looking for a compact truck.
