where to check motor temps with temp gun?

Hey guys where do you guys take your temps from that will give you the most accurate reading to gauge engine temps? I usually take temps ftom the top of the heatsink as well as the back of the motor can. Of course the motor can temps are usually a lot lower. Which temp should I be using to tell my engines temps?

I would go by your highest reading and if it gets close to 180 shut it down

Make sure you take temps ON THE MOTOR. The highest temp is usually near the rear but as said, go by your highest reading.

For added security and taking into account temp gun accuracy I just add on ten degrees F to my readings.
